Stone Ridge Creamery Peppermint Cookies 'n Cream Ice Cream Review

[New for 2012] A few weeks ago I saw the press release for two new flavors from Stone Ridge Creamery, the in-house brand of SuperValu grocery stores. One is the awesome sounding Cinnamon Snickerdoodle, the other is the fun sounding....

Peppermint Cookies 'n Cream
Stone Ridge Creamy Limited Edition Real Ice Cream

Now I'm not seeing alot of cookies here, but I definitely see a lot of candies.
I take a big whiff and it's definitely got a decent holiday scent

I take my first bite: There's definitely more of a candy cane vibe than there was in Breyer's Grasshopper Pie (which is expected, but you never know until you try it sometimes). The cookies 'n cream vibe is pretty weak. I try aiming for big cookie bit and it does help a bit, but the big bits are few and far between.

The candy cane bits may look like they've all melted, but I keep hitting little chunks of candy cane in every bite (you know that familiar frozen candy cane crunch). We've also got tiny cookie bits throughout, but the mild spots are no match for the candy cane flavor.

Ahhhhh, there's that familiar menthol candy cane mouthfeel. No peppermint treat is complete without it. We've also got a fine mainstream texture here, definitely not gritty or gummy. Overall, this ice cream has got a lot of positives for an entry level brand.

Alright, I'm gonna smush up the last bit in my bowl. Hehehe, I think I like this pink color better, it's more festive. That minty vapor feeling has now spread out uniformly rather than just being in spots. Sure, you lose some of that ice cream feel, but now the mint tingle is in full affect. Man, it's funny how I've totally gotten into the peppermint flavors this year. I have no idea what I'll do with myself come January.

On Second Scoop: I've dug a few more servings and there is still no sign of increased cookie activity, so my beef with this ice cream isn't going to be that it's bad, it's just mislabeled. It's got that nice candy cane vibe to it, it's just totally underwhelming in the cookie vibe department. So I'll admit that I'm disappointed in that respect, but with a nice base texture and good mint flavor that always has me pining for a second bowl, this one is still a nice edition to this in-house brand.

Verdict?  Needs more cookies!
Buy Again?  It's possible

I think I've done more mint reviews in the last month than I have in the 4 years before that.
