Edy's / Dreyer's Butterfinger MAXX Ice Cream Review

[discontinued after 2013]

"live" blogging  = doing some typing while I'm eating (instead of all at the end)

I just made myself walk the 3/4 of a mile to the gas station to see what they had for Edy's ( Dreyer's ) MAXX flavors. I was in no mood for mint, wary of the drumstick, and just not ready for peanut butter chunk. I grabbed the Butterfinger MAXX, handed over my $2.99, and headed back to the office.

RIP OFF the lid,

GRAB a spoon

and JUST DIG IN!

Those are their words on the side, not mine. My little pint also reads Vanilla Ice Cream with Nestle Butterfinger Candy Pieces and a Peanut Butter swirl. I don't know if it will be as tasty as that DQ Butterfinger blizzard I really wanted, but you don't know 'til you try.

Crack open the container. There's no seal, so the off-white ice cream is fully exposed with little orange butterfinger bits everywhere. Lots of bits is a good sign, but where are the chocolate ones?

I see the peanut butter swirl in the middle, so let's dig into that. Yup, definitely peanut butter, but the swirl thickness varies so it's not super potent. I dig into a thicker spot. It's a nice respectable peanut butter, no complaints on the flavor. It's also not too salty or dry.

Ok, I've downed 1 of 4 servings and I've only had one sizable butterfinger bit, the rest are quite small. The ice cream has melted a bit from the walk back (even though I brought my lunch bag and ice packs), so I tempted to keep digging and looking for more bits. I occasional hit a chocolate one, but overall this ice cream seems to be about the Butterfinger's insides.

ugggg, it was way too easy to eat 2+ servings and now that I've sat for a few minutes, I'm feeling a bit too full and I might need to go for another walk. Overall I have enjoyed my experience, but I'll probably stick with Edy's Loaded Butterfinger next time I need my Butterfinger fix. This ice cream is decent, but I'm not basking in it's glory or anything like that. I guess the thing that gets me is the lack of chocolate. Butterfinger is about crunchy peanut butter with a complimentary chocolate shell, but I'm just not feeling the chocolate here

Now that I've had MAXX, you would think I would understand it's place in the world, but I really don't. My first assumption was that it would be loaded with Butterfinger bits "TO THE EXTREME MAXX", but it isn't. Well, technically it's loaded, but when those bits are itty bitty, it's just not the same.

Is MAXX meant to compete with H-D and B&J maybe? At 30%, it's got a fairly high saturated fat content like those other 2, but it's not like the ice cream was exceptionally rich, thick or creamy. The texture was kinda funky actually. Not chewy, but not quite right either.

I'm trying to find a press release or pretty much any official speak about MAXX but I'm not having much luck.... I always get confused when a product line isn't even on the manufacturer's website.

Flashback: Who remembers Butterfinger BBs?

On Second Scoop: Well, it wasn't hard to finish off the last third of this container. This is a decent little treat with a mild butterfinger taste. The peanut butter stays in the shadows and only once on my second scoop did I get a bite that tasted more like peanut butter than like butterfinger. I also only hit one more butterfinger bit and it was maybe pee size. Maybe the fat content is based on more butterfinger bits and this is actually the healthier version ....yeah, probably not.

  1. I've had the mint version from this MAXX line a couple times, I'm not really a huge fan. It's very airy. When I first picked up the pint I thought someone had tampered with it and eaten some, but it was new. I am not sure if that's how all their ice cream is, but I'm used to thick HD type ice cream that you need to let soften for a bit. This was scoopable right away. I'm the type of person who takes 2-3 days to finish a pint of B&J or HD, but I was able to finish a whole pint of this stuff in one sitting within 20 minutes. It wasn't even very satisfying for all of the dang calories! Not worth it in my opinion!

  2. Yeah, I agree, it's an odd texture. You would expect it to be healthier but it isn't. Where did all the fat go?
