Edy's Outshine Lemon Fruit Bar Review

Ok, you know the drill on these Edy's (Dreyer's) treats: simple ingredients means a simple review: Like the other fruit bars it's good quality, and when they say it tastes like lemonade - they mean it! I can't say anything bad about it, just make sure you are in the mood for lemonade, say in the middle of a hot day. You can't go into this one expecting a mellow treat (for example, 9 o'clock last night was the wrong time for this one)

2013 Update: These are now Lemon Outshine bars. They have the same ingredient mix but I believe they shortened the name to reinforce the whole all natural theme.

another design change?

sorry, the old design was feeling more freezer burned by the day. I'm not in love with this one, but I have put some time in to take it from a 3 column to a 2 column design. Let's consider it a work in progress.

upsides? it looks cleaner, and I should be able to add a real menu bar.

downsides? running with this design means I have to go back and fix my images (oh the excitement!) Plus every now and then an image doesnt show up. Plus I don't know if the design is two lightly colored (but that can be tweaked)

let me know what you think, i can easily be convinced to move on

UPDATE: yeah, I'm on a different (cheezier) monitor now and the colors looked all washed out, so I'm tinkering a bit.

Keep it Fresh!

So, you can't seem to eat your ice cream before it starts getting dark and crystally. Well, our modern auto-defrosting freezers don't help, but this trick might: So you go to the store, pick up your favorite half gallon, and take it home. When you get home, you take it out of the bag and throw it in the fridge...Don't do it! Leave the ice cream in the bag, it adds a great layer of protection that will buy your beloved ice cream extra time in the freezer. (it's not perfect, but this has been a big help considering all the ice cream in my freezer)

Breyers Waffle Cone OVERLOAD!

In 2011, Waffle Cone became a Breyers Blasts Flavor. In 2012 they added a strawberry variant.

Oh yeah, only in New England can you go from a high of 45 degrees one day and 85 the next! Oh...I just adore those nauseating temperature swings. Am I exaggerating? maybe a smidge, I think technically it was 48 to 83, but no matter, it was painful either way and this weekend had ice cream written all over it.

Toppings: Marble Mix'ins CRUNCH Rocky Road

So, there they were, tempting me at the entrance of the freezer aisle. Sure, Marble Mix'ins plain sprinkles are just awful, but maybe, just maybe, they have something good up their sleeve. They can't all be bad....or can they?

Well, I had a few choices, but the CRUNCH one caught my attention. Chocolate, Marshmallows and CRUNCH - sounds good to me. Well, I did a little sample on Sunday when I bought them, and I just did a full scale taste test about an hour ago, so now I can honestly say that these are just plain awful. The problem is the little rock hard marshmallow pieces. They are these fake tasting little rocks that ruin the whole thing. The foul taste permeates into the crunch pieces. There are also hard little chocolate rocks as well. They don't taste great, but the artificial marshmallow hasn't affected them as much.

There is not a single nice thing that I can say about this topping. Save your $3.29 and avoid these little buggers, you'll be glad you did.

Klondike's Choco Taco Review

Behold, the mighty Choco Taco! Well, maybe not mighty, but it does say "Fudge Grande" on the package. The exact description of our little friend is as follows:

Organic So Delicious Chocolate Velvet Review

oh...the things I do for this blog....yet again I take one for the team, so that you, the consumer, can save your hard earned cash....ok, you got me, I would have done this even without the blog.

So, what am I complaining about? the freshly re-branded Organic So Delicious from Turtle Mountain, formerly known as Organic Soy Delicious. That's right, I bought a non-dairy frozen dessert...and I want my $4 back. I've been waiting a long time for it to go on sale and it finally did yesterday. Now I wish it hadn't.

Ok, ok, I'll be nicer now. I mean, if you have problems with dairy, then you probably never had real ice cream and you don't know what you are missing. There's even the added incentive that this particular brand is very low in fat (and vegan and cholesterol free)....the problem is ingredient #3: "ORGANIC BROWN RICE SYRUP AND/OR ORGANIC TAPIOCA SYRUP" You can taste it, and as much I love a good tapioca pudding, I don't want it in my frozen dessert. I didn't even make myself that big a serving, but I started dumping toppings on it trying to cover the taste....wait, that give's me an idea: I think we've having so delicious milkshakes with dinner. It just might work!

On Second Scoop: ...well, the shake idea didn't work, and I tried REALLY hard to make it work. I added whip cream, milk, cocoa (was out of Nesquik), and then in one final blaze of glory, I blended in 3 Oreos. It wasn't awful, but it was by no means a real milkshake. I think I'm all done with So Delicious.

Ben & Jerry's Chocolate Macadamia Ice Cream Review

[New for 2009, now discontinued] Chocolate Macadamia...it's a flavor with a mission. As much as Ben & Jerry do for the planet and it's people, they're taking it up another notch with sustainable macadamia nuts and fair trade cocoa and vanilla (no messing with Vanillin here). They've put a lot of thought into this product, but how does it taste?

Ben & Jerry's Light Phish Food Ice Cream

When I come home after work, the first thing I try to do is give my daughter a big hug and ask her if she had a good day at school, at which point she pretty much always answers yes... except today. She didn't really clarify, she only said that "I'm mad because I'm sad, and I'm sad because I'm mad". She was also unamused with her lunch, even though it was one of her favorite things to eat.

Cold Stone Creamery Strawberry Passion
Ice Cream Cake Review

Ok, and that's the end of the review....just kidding, but you're already imagining eating it aren't you? When you're hard core like CSC, you reputation preceeds you: You expect something quality and tasty. Good, but not necessarily fantastic.

So, yesterday, we head to my in-laws who always put a great holiday feast on the table. We had a tasty ham surrounded by a nice variety of sides (homemade applesauce, fresh veggies, casseroles, etc). As nice as dinner is, dessert is by no means neglected, no no no, plus there's always a pattern to it. My mom-in-law has a different cheesecake: this holiday was an Oreo cheesecake that was quickly devoured. Next, my dad-in-law always puts at least one fruit pie on the table: this time is was an excellent apple crumb pie (nice and cold, just like my ice cream). Does it stop there? Of course not! We also have the alternating dish: could be anything really, and this time it was the Strawberry Passion Ice Cream Cake.
Strawberry passion is one of the six Signature Cakes from CSC. It was an 8" round that supposedly serves 14, though it's marked off into 6 sections (don't ask me why). I took 2/3 of one of these sections and gave the other third to my daughter...who had no interest in it. I was shocked really. She had a few bites, then grabbed a few of the cookies that were infront of her, didn't like those, then ran off to sit with her auntie who was right next to a big plate of these powdery cookies. Apparently those cookies were good since all that was left was a little powdery face and a smile....but no matter, this is not a cookie blog, it's all about the ice cream! strawberry ice cream layered with red velvet cake! don't forget the strawberry frosting and a ring of graham cracker chunks.

This cake looks fantastic! I just wanted to pull the whole thing in front of me and eat to my hearts content. That, of course, would probably be a bad idea in the long run. So, I went with just a slice and dug in. I like it, I don't love it, but I like it. There's a layer of strawberry puree in the middle and the consistency throws me off a bit when I bit into the cake. Maybe I should have let it thaw a little longer, but hey, that's something to keep in mind when you buy this cake. Sure, it's $27.50 (before coupon), but you have to try it at least once. I'd probably recommend it as a birthday cake, because whoever gets it should really be impressed since the presentation, at least to a die hard ice cream fan, it fantastic...Oh, I already said that didn't I?

So presentation is great. Taste is good. I think I'd almost like a bit more frosting on it. I think the last few bites, the ones with a great frosting to cake ratio, were the most enjoyable. I was just enjoying my cake, thinking it was good, then i had those last 4 bites and the little switch in my brain turned on and told me to cut another slice. I didn't though, I finished with a small slice of the apple crumb pie instead.

One side note: In the CSC picture, it looks like there are graham cracker chunks in the cake itself, but I didn't notice this yesterday.

Woohoo!! Post #250!!

A Breakfast Tradition: AP Cake

I've always been bothered by something on the internet: Why can't I find an Appie Cake recipe? I mean, am I calling it the wrong thing? Am I spelling it wrong? Is it Apie or Apee? You see, Appie cake was something I grew up on, yet according to Google, it doesn't seem to exist. 97 billion webpages can't be wrong...or can they? Update: Couldn't find it because it's listed as AP Cake Recipe or A.P. Cake Recipe, which does seem to translate well to All Purpose cake.

Ok, I know this has nothing to do with ice cream, but we do occasionally bake here at the scoop, so I present to you a mild yet satisfying treat. Traditionally served as or with breakfast, Appie cake is great plain or served with butter. (excuse me while I add Appie to my spelling dictionary so it stops trying to correct it). Where does it come from? I don't really know. Amish? not sure. Pennsylvania Dutch? yeah, maybe...probably, iunno, maybe someone can chime in and let us know.

Appie Cake Recipe
1/2 cup (1 stick) of butter/margarine
2.5 Cups of Flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
1 cup dark brown sugar
1 egg
1/2 cup milk
(Cane) Sugar for sprinkles

Here goes: Preheat the over to 350 degrees. Mix the Flour, baking soda and baking powder. Next, stir in the dark brown sugar. Now, thoroughly blend in the (room temp) butter or margarine [my mom always used margarine, though we've been trying it with butter recently].

Beat the egg into the half cup of milk and put into the mixture. You're going to windy up with a pasty batter. Spread this into a 9" pie plate (nice and flat). Sprinkle with sugar (Cane sugar works great). Now put it in the oven for 40-45 minutes.

I took mine out at 42 minutes (when a toothpick came clean from the center)

That's it, you're done! Pretty simple! I've stated before I'm no chef, and this recipe may not be perfect, but it should get you pretty close to what you are looking for. I think I remember it being just a little more moist, but maybe I just need to keep adding milk til I get it perfect. Then I was wondering if I should have used unsalted butter, but considering my mom always used margarine (which is salted), I don't really know. If you have any suggestions (or an alternate recipe), let me know! [below is a close up of final result]

Serving Suggestion: We use to cut it like a pie as a kid, but a 3/4" thick rectangular piece works as well. Spread on some butter or margarine to make it perfect.

Season's Greetings!

No, I don't mean Christmas, I mean Ice Cream Season! For those of you in the warmer states, you probably don't know that us folks in the north suffer a 5 month stint (Nov-Mar) where most of our ice cream shops are closed.

Well, it's April now and the "OPEN" flags are flying. I would have stopped today but lunch was sitting rather heavily in my stomach. Don't worry, the scoops will be scoopin' soon enough.

HEHEHEHE, too funny! We all scream for ice cream just visited my favorite local spot, Uhlman's!

New Smucker's Cupcake Magic Shell

It's been awhile since I've reviewed a topping, let alone a brandy new one. For your enjoyment (or lack there of), may I painfully present: Smucker's New Cupcake flavored Magic Shell! This is my first experience with magic shell, so let's make it interesting.

Take (1) Breyer's Oreo Ice Cream Sandwich

The Magic Shells pours out easily (and smells good too)

Wow, now isn't that impressive?

Let's coat the sides for good measure.

The only thing left to do was give this bad boy a taste test....and learn if this was a good idea...was this the work of a food genius? or the work of a foolish masochist? oh, the anticipation! the drama! the IMMENSE desire...to SPIT this junk out of my mouth. Oh...OHHHH it's awful. Talk about taking one for the team. My taste buds are being overpowered by some foul invading army. Run tastesbuds run!!!!! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! Ok, I'll stop now. I took a few more bites trying to get different ratios of magic shell to Oreo. Then I gave up and the last bit went in the trash. To be fair, I'll try it again at another time, but for now, spoons down!

Nutrion: 2 Tbsp = 35g : 220 / 150-8 / 0 / 1 (yeah, it ain't healthy)

2017 Foot Note: While this product has disappear, Smuckers has a Funfetti Vanilla Cake Magic Shell which appears to be just a blue version of this older product.

Breyers Ice Cream Sandwiches with OREO
An Ice Cream Treat Review

Update: These are now under the Klondike Banner, see the new review.

I'm actually surprised that I managed to go six months since trying the tasty Breyers Mrs. Fields Cookie Sandwiches. As you pass these Oreo treats in the freezer aisle, you can't help but assume that they are going to be tasty...and overall, I would say they are. I was hungry, and I did go to quick, but I noticed two things. One, the ice cream itself is bland like it is in Mrs. Fields sandwiches. Two, the cookies are very dry. Not dry enough to stop me, but well, actually, I did hesitate for a moment to think about it now and then. It doesn't happen every bite, so maybe there's a technique to bite it just right. Hmmm, or maybe the ice cream in the middle needs to be a smidge thicker...funny, that's what I said about the other ones too the first time I tried them.

Alright, so now that I'm warmed up, we'll see how second scoop goes...and at only 2.5g of fat, second scoop may be in about an hour!

On Second Scoop: I managed to resist and waited until today (monday) for another one. I still "like" them, but I still think the Oreo part is too dry. I think we need to shove some smooth & dreamy between the giant Oreo cookies instead of this bleach white blandness and then we'll be in business!
