Friendly's Boston Cream Pie Ice Cream

[New for Early 2024] When I saw this flavor, it took awhile to convince myself that it was actually new. As a company that started in Massachusetts, how could Friendly's not have attempted this one sooner? Better late than never?

Friendly's Boston Cream Pie Ice Cream
Bavarian cream flavored ice cream swirled with fudge, Boston cream filling and yellow cake pieces

Can I sidetrack for a second? I saw this skyline and went "how is this the Boston skyline?". As a long time Mass resident, and a one time Boston resident, I was a bit dumbstruck as to how this could be Boston. After much searching, I think it's supposed to be an ocean front view, this one in particular. I don't know how they picked this view, or why they did such a terrible job of recreating it, but I think I feel better now... No, dont think I do. Could they not have spent a little more time on this?

Hmmmm.....

Wow! Check out the vibrancy of that filling! I was not expecting that!

I was not expecting the fudge swirl and filling swirl to be so intertwined. I should have taken a picture of the large solid filling swirl that I scooped out when I went to dig in to that vibrantly colored spot in the middle there.

I was also not expecting the swirl to be.... I want to say chewy. It's not taffy chewy, but I need to stress that it's a non-traditional swirl and that there was a bit of chew to it. I'm not really sure what I could compare it to since it's not really reminding me of any other ice creams right now.

So how does the fudge affect everything? Well, it's more prevalent than you might suspect. That's not necessarily the worst thing, but I was hoping for more of a Boston cream pie vibe than a straight up fudge vibe. I will try to scoop a little more carefully on the second scooping.

The good news is that it is ice cream (not frozen dairy dessert), so it's dense enough and it's also fairly busy. I went small scooping on this first test, so we'll see how the next one goes.

On Second Scoop: tomorrow maybe

    1. So, I literally just tried it. The only ice cream I ever buy is friendlies they're the best. Unfortunately, I tried this and it was very disappointing. I didn't taste anything other than the fudge part. The rest of the ice cream it was a strong flavor of banana I'm assuming that came from the yellow take pieces? Not too sure. As far as every other ice cream they made is so tasty.!!!

  2. So I just tried this flavor, and I loved it! Friendly's is one of the only brands that still tastes like it did when I was a kid. I Def saw and tasted the vibrant swirl and agree with you on the texture. To me, it struck me as a frozen Boston cream custard flavor. Friendly's is the only company who can do FDD and I actually like it. I'm still thinking about their old Northeast Pothole flavor.

  5. This is the best ice cream I’ve ever had in my entire life. I love the texture and the chewy cake pieces. I can taste the Boston cream but I wish it was more prevalent. The only bad thing about this ice cream is that it’s hard to find. The only place I’ve found it is at my local market basket, but it’s hit or miss if they actually have it.

    1. Because Limited Edition. I suggest writing to them and encouraging them to bring it back next year if you enjoy it that much.
