Oatmeal Cookie Chunk from Outside the Cone

On September 9th, 2019, Outside the Cone opened it's doors in Wyndhurst, Virginia. On January 19th, 2020, they sent me a direct message on instagram. Kyle asked me if I would be willing to try their version of Oatmeal Cookie Chunk. That's right, it's meant to replicate that badly missed Ben & Jerry's (archived here). Did I say yes? Ofcourse!

Outside the Cone Oatmeal Cookie Chunk Ice Cream
(cinnamon ice cream with oatmeal cookie chunks and chocolate chunks)

That looks pretty good right?
hand packed pint ($6.50 if you are near their store)

I take my first bite and I am shocked by how the cinnamon bites back. I do not remember OCC having a kick like that. This pint has come too far to not press on though.

I start getting in to the big cookie chunks and chocolate chunks and things do balance out a bit. No, that's not fair. What I should say is that the urge to inhale half the pint kicked in despite the spicy factor. It's a quality ice cream that demands another bite.

The cookies were soft are fresh. I didn't get a huge blast of flavor from them, but that's probably because the base by itself is already so flavorful. I also want to give a thumbs up to the chocolate chunks. It's not a bitter or dark chocolate, it's just a nice (semi-sweet?) chocolate that's easy to bite in to. I don't know what they use for chunks, but they really go well in ice cream.

I enjoyed myself despite being a little weary of the cinnamon factor. Remember, I adore cinnamon, but I love sweet cinnamon, not fireball cinnamon, so this is a bit out of my comfort zone. In fact, I've been thinking about this one all day and that's always a good thing.

Thanks to Kyle and Outside the Cone for sending this over. They also sent their PB Graham^2 flavor that will be coming with me to work tomorrow.

On Second Scoop: I have been slowly snacking on this one every day, usually in the morning and despite the kick, I think I'm a little sad that it's gone now. Note: In the comment section, Kyle said he has tinkered with the cinnamon level so I definitely did get one of their spicier batches.

Verdict?  tasty but with a kick
Buy Again?  I cant, but maybe someday!

  1. Thanks for the review! I've made several versions of the flavor over the years and definitely did add more cinnamon this time. Glad you liked the chocolate chunks! We melt a blend of chocolates and hand-cut the chunks. It allows for different sizing depending on what we're going for in a particular flavor. Winds up being semi-sweet as you thought (roughly 50%). I look forward to the next review

  3. Man that brings up massive feelings of trauma over the original departure of Oatmeal Cookie Chunk. Every damn person who tried it loved that flavor, there were petitions to the White House to bring it back. I wrote to Ben and Jerrys every year for 5 years asking for it to return. Eventually I resigned to the fact that they would never do so. As far as I understand it, while they were doing their transition to non GMO and reaching back to their bakery suppliers, the company that made the oatmeal cookies in OCC decided to close their bakery. And so they say they couldnt bring it back even if they wanted to. Sad sad day and my relationship with B and J has gone down from there.
