Big Gay Ice Cream - Dorothy

[New for 2017]  You may find this shocking, but I've actually be trying to avoid chocolate lately. The problem is, what do I buy then? Oh, this will work..

Big Gay Ice Cream - Dorothy
vanilla ice cream with vanilla wafer cookies
& thick swirls of dulce de leche

(silly label removed) -- Not amazing, but it has potential

Money Shot! Yeah, the first half of the pint was chock full of wafer chunks and they hit the spot. It's not the most amazing flavor ever, but it's trying pretty hard and I always appreciate that.

I'll be honest, after I bought it, I got a little concerned that it might be borry, but right from the first bite, I knew I was going to enjoy it. As an added bonus, it's a fresher pint than the two I picked up last year. I will totally be buying this one again... wait, I'm supposed to say that at the end.

So yeah, nice dense base (not H-D dense but plenty dense enough). The base isn't super strong, you won't be picking up any vanilla bean notes blasting over the cookies and swirl, but it's good. Love all the wafer bits. Not too crunchy, not too dry, just a nice, middle of the road texture to them. I think there is a small part of me that wants some kind of chip in here, just so I hit all the textures, but I do love how busy this one is. The swirl wasn't as impactful as I thought it might be, but I was ok with that. I really wanted the wafers to be #1 and in my pint they were.

Great first scooping here, it'll be hard not to finish this one off tomorrow (I try to do three servings per pints but I'm thinking it'll be two).

On Second Scoop: Even better on day #2. (I should have stopped but I shoved the last half dozen bites in anyway, whoops!). A couple of the wafer chunks were a bit more crunchy, but I think I appreciated more how the wafers and caramel play together. I like it because it's different. Good times.

Footnote: the new flavors for 2019 are Banan-o-Graham, Fluffernutter, and Spicy Choco-Lit. I'll keep my eyes peeled for them but it'll probably be awhile before I see them.

Verdict?  enjoyable
Buy Again?  Yup!

  1. Is Dorothy supposed to mean something--like does it have a slang connotation?

  2. I was thinking the vanilla wafer chunks were meant to be like a yellow brick road but I quick internet search reminds me that several of their flavors are inspired by the old Golden Girls tv show (Dorothy being one of the characters).

  3. Plays into the ice cream theme. "Friend of Dorothy" was old-ish slang for a gay person.
