Still Searching....

The good news is that I am still searching for new stuff when I can manage to not be working (things are better but not back to normal yet), but the bad news is that I'm still not finding anything besides the new Magnum pints and new low cal Talenti stuff.

When I do finally find something new, the most popular question will definitely be "where did you find that?". Since it's been awhile, let me recap where I go and maybe it will inspire you to track down that store you don't normally check out. In general, I've got Market Basket, Price Chopper and Stop & Shop (Giant), with secondary stops of Hannaford (Food Lion), Shaws, and Roche Bros. Occasionally I go to Whole Foods but I try to avoid it. There's also Walmart and Target ofcourse. In general, I have access to two or three of each of these stores, but I'm not hitting each of these stores multiple times a day. I do what I can with visits ranging from a couple times a week to a visit every couple of weeks, it just depends on access and timing.

Oh, side note, I've lost access to Baskin-Robbins but I do still have a DQ nearby, as well as several local places like the beloved Uhlman's (which I haven't covered in forever).

Ok, back in to the frozen trenches I guess. What will I find first? I'm hoping to find the new Haagen-Dazs ice cream cookie squares or maybe one of the new crispy Trio flavors that adds a layer of sauce in to the Trio concept. How is your ice cream hunting going?

  1. I've had better luck with ice cream bars than I have with ice cream. I haven't seen the Magnum pints or the low cal Talenti. Ben and Jerry's and Haagen Dazs are also proving to be difficult to find. I have found two of the three pint slices. The Tonight Dough disappointed me - I didn't think the ice cream tasted like caramel ice cream. And, I am not a big peanut butter fan ... which means i am probably not the best judge of that flavor. I really enjoyed the Cherry Garcia slices (far more than expected - Cherry Garcia has never been a favorite). I'd buy them again.

I did find both Haagen Dazs cookie slices. Both are good. The vanilla was my favorite of the two (dulce de leche was a bit too sweet - but still worth buying).

I found all of these items at Smiths (Kroger). No luck anywhere else.

I am most excited for the new Trios and the Haagen Dazs honey almond ice cream (forgot the exact name).

  2. Wow, somebody has had good luck hunting! I don't know how or why Mass lost it's cutting edge freezer aisle choices. There are still things I've never seen like airheads ice cream or that fiber one ice cream.

  3. I tried the Ben n Jerry knock off from Aldi today. It was surprisingly good for $2. It wasn't full of air like some of the cheap ones you find. I got the cookie dough brownie one. It is stuffed full of cookie dough and brownie chunks. Might be a good one to try for the blog. I like seeing reviews of store brands sometimes too.

  4. Do you have a Stewarts Gas Station near you? They have awesome ice cream. You could also try other gas stations - I know Cumberland Farms has their own brand of ice cream.

  5. @Jaguarrior: yeah, technically I have Aldi's in the general area but it's rare I go there.

@Anna: Nick lives near Stewarts http://www.onsecondscoop.com/search?q=stewart%27s and I live near Cumby's http://www.onsecondscoop.com/search/label/cumbys (who is better at branding but not better at making ice cream)

  7. No luck with BJ or HD pints - just ice cream bars.

I finally found the Magnum tubs and the new Talenti at Target. The ice cream does have a very light texture - but they are worth trying. I like the chocolate hazelnut best. Then raspberry dark chocolate. They certainly are not the same quality as HD trios.

The low-cal Talenti is better than Halo Top - but it’s still more of the same. I’d rather eat a little bit of real ice cream than a pint of that. It’s a bit disappointing that Talenti isn’t making any new flavors this year ... that are real gelato. At least that is how it seems.

  8. Seems like the Turkey Hill Box of Chocolates has significantly changed from your initial review (I found the 2008 one and the list of mix-ins is completely different). I have a carton sitting in my freezer now waiting for me to get to it (have to finish a few other open items), but curious if there's any chance to get an updated review?

Thanks again for all you do! As I fellow blogger (I run a fantasy sports website) I truly appreciate the time and effort you put in and I look forward to seeing your thoughts!

  9. @Eric: you know what's weird? I would have bet you a dollar that I updated that review at some point. I feel like I had it a few years ago but I just have too many pictures to verify if I did or not (I have over 40,000 files in my ice cream folder that lives on my computer). You got me curious now so I will put it on the to do list but it may be a little while before I find it.

  10. I have never seen Box of Chocolates here in Houston. Every year I try to find it, no luck!

  11. I know you are down on friendlys but I'm curious about the new "Boston" flavor. And, in the interim period before you find and review the new products, what about the Alden organic ice cream? Or Whole foods 365? The flavors seem quite standard so I'm interested in the quality...and you have had so many brands that you can provide a good comparison.

One other thing...I know breyers has gone way downhill but has anyone had the mint chocolate chip lately? It is one of the few that is still ice cream (vs fdd) and, although gummier than it was about 20 years ago, I had it recently and it seems like it's getting better than it was a few years ago...thoughts? The flavor is great and I love how many chips (albeit not top quality) it has.

  12. @Deb: ha, that's a long list! what do you mean by Boston flavor, the pothole one? I tried picking up Alden's from Market Basket and wound up spending $6.99 on something that was horribly freezer burned though I know I should try again. I had whole foods 365 long ago, but like you said, it's standard flavors and there are few of them.

I actually snuck in two Breyers reviews last year and I thought the chocolate mint was decent
