Random Post: FDA Serving Size Changes

You remember last year how the FDA said that changes were coming to the nutrition label? I remember it happening but I didn't exactly go scouring the FDA announcement to dive deep in the specifics of it all. Basically I've just been waiting for the changes to kick like everyone else. As the title of this posts suggest though, there is something else that is changing.

As you can see, serving sizes are going to become more realistic. I like to think that I've been a long term proponent of pacing yourself while eating ice cream, but getting 4 servings from a pint is a pretty hard thing for me to do. Yes there are times when I inhale a pint in two servings (made easier if it's regular ice cream and not heavier, super premium ice cream), but I really do think 3 is a fair number for a pint. So instead of a review today, I will ask a simple question: how many servings do you get from a pint? or a quart if that's your thing? do you approve of the FDA's changes? or is it just really boring waiting for the 2017 ice cream season to start?

  1. I usually get 2 servings per pint. As far as the FDA is concerned, it's not going to change the way I eat, so I'm neutral on the changes. I don't actually follow the labels or rely on them, like some people with dietary concerns may.

  2. I just eat the whole point, so i don't really care about the serving size.

  3. I don't get pints often, but when I do I feel like I generally get 3 (maybe a little bit more). Never was able to get 4, so I'd say the new guidelines are about dead on for me

  4. I get anywhere from 1 to 4 servings per pint. It just depends. I'm worried that these changes will encourage companies to lighten up add more gums and stabilizers to their products to bring calorie counts down. I guess we shall see.

  5. I don't know how anyone gets 4 servings ! I eat half each time and that's just right for me.

  6. If I'm really feeling like I deserve a reward I'll eat the entire pint (unless it's Halo Top, Enlightened, or So Delicious' No Sugar Added in which case I'll without a question eat the entire pint every time because I won't hate myself for it and it's delicious), but usually when I go to the store and try to exercise self restraint I end up with two servings a pint. I appreciate what the FDA is trying to do, but I don't think anything was wrong with the 4 listed servings. If you're dieting you're not going to eat much more than that probably, or if you do you can just do the math and figure it out. I feel like having 3 servings per container will make the math more cumbersome and it's usually easier for people to divide things evenly rather than working with odd numbers (1/8 or 1/4 of a cake seems easier to guesstimate than 1/5, for example). I think it's ridiculous they're spending all this time and effort on such a minor change.

  7. A serving is just "heres whats in a given amount of this food" Thats all. You determine how much food you need and how much to eat at one time.

  8. If kids today could easily do math, then it would not matter. You could adjust based on how much you ate. As for myself, I get three out of one container so it's dead on for me.

  9. I usually get 3-4 servings out of a pint. Once, I ate a pint in two servings, but I was only able to do this because I was really high.

  10. uhhhh.... sometimes I really do just eat "a spoon" if ice cream, so 10 servings in a pint, but other times it is 3 or 4.

  11. Its just ridiculous. At least when a serving is a half a cup, you can make quick measurements to calculate up to a cup or multiples of a cup easily. Now its some ridiculous 5.33 oz per serving, making it impossible to calculate cups or multiples of cups easily. And btw its not 3 servings per pint with haagen dazs because they have a fake 15 oz pint. So for them that label would list 2.85 servings per 'pint'. Unnecessary garbage from the govt

  12. It usually takes about 5-8 servings for me, but I'm also a part of a pretty big family so I think it's mostly an attempt to make sure everyone can have some.
