Yuengling's Cherry Vanilla Chunk Ice Cream

[New for 2016] Time for the third of four new 2016 flavors from Yuenglings Ice Cream. Cinnamon Churro wasn't my style, Cookies & Cream was pleasant enough, and I still haven't seen the new Butter Pecan flavor. That just leaves...

Do I have any expectations here? Not really, this is more of a test to see how it stacks up against the competition. What are the big things to look for? One, how big (and good) are the chocolate chunks is one way to set itself apart. Two, how do they handle the cherry aspect? Big chunks or little bits and then overall cherry flavoring.

Grrrr, ice crystals, but I proceed. Guess what? I like it. You kind of hope/expect Yuengling to go with a nice, fairly bold cherry flavor and they do that here. As a beverage company, I think I expect them to aim more for cherry coke than some mild cherry ice cream and they deliver on that. I usually don't crave cherry ice cream, but if I did, this is the style of flavoring I want.

I start getting in to the chocolate chunks. They are a good 1/4" square and fairly thin, but not so thin that they can't leave a nice little chocolate aftertaste on the ol' tastebuds. It's a chocolate that goes well with cherry, not too dark and with a bit of milk chocolate vibe to it. They've also got just the right amount of crunch to them. Maybe I could use a few more of them but that's just nitpicking.

Wow, this was just way too easy to inhale and now half the pint is now gone. I really like this one, they did as nice job. They have a nice knack with classic fruity flavors. Now I kind of want them to make a black raspberry flavor.

On Second Scoop: Several minutes ago, I was very hungry and there was half a pint of ice cream in front of me. Now, I feel better and the pint is empty. For whatever reason, I think I like my cherry flavors in a nice mainstream texture. Not too light, but not too dense. I want that cherry flavor to pop at just the right rate as that middle of the road texture melts on my tastebuds. I also like that the cherry chunks aren't icy and distracting. This really is dialed in nicely. My only complaint is that I would like a few more chips but that's only because I'm enjoying them so much. Nicely done Yuengling.

Verdict?  dialed in nicely
Buy Again?  yup

  1. Is this better than the Graeter's equivalent? That's my favorite currently of the cherry chip variety, and it made the B&J's Cherry Garcia completely inedible for me ;) Thanks!

  2. they are both good, but I wouldn't put them head to head, instead I would ask what you are in the mood for. Do you want the heavier ice cream with the bigger chips, or do you want something a bit more mainstream. That said, I would give it a try!
