Turkey Hill Black Cherry Fudge Ice Cream

[New for 2016, discontinued] I was sure to grab both of the new all natural Turkey Hill fruity flavors on my last trip to Wegmans. I really enjoyed the blackberry swirl and now it's time for...

Turkey Hill Black Cherry Fudge Ice Cream
all natural black cherry ice cream with a fudge swirl

The swirl is hiding at first....

There's the swirl! It looks pretty thin like Hershey's sauce instead of one of their heartier swirls. Also, I know my pictures mess with colors a bit, but it is actually light purple and not light pink like you might expect. There's lots of little cherry flecks everywhere too.

I take a few bites and the cherry flavor does have a bit of bite to it, but I can already tell that the fudge is attempting to temper that bite. I'm trying to think of the last time I had a cherry base with a fudge swirl (as opposed to fudge chunks).

I'll be honest, I'm not sure what to make of it at first. Like I've been trying to point out in the last few turkey hill reviews is that the texture is "main stream" aka not dense like a super premium offering. In this case, what that means is having a familiar cherry flavor but not in a denser cherry garcia way. It just feels different. Not bad different, just different (and this coming the guy who eats too much ice cream).

It almost had a cherry coke float vibe to it. I just haven't gotten a bite that's overridden with fudge, instead it's playing off the cherry and giving me this mixed, complex flavor instead. It's strong yet inviting. No, it's cherry, but more complex like a root beer. (what am I talking about?)

I can sum up all my thoughts in one word, "unexpected". I tend to use that word for different aspects of ice cream but I really do mean it. I expected it to be similar to every other cherry ice cream I've ever had, but the various aspects have come together in a neat way. I'm definitely curious to see how this one grows on me over the next few servings.

On Second Scoop: I'll admit it, I question my reviewing skills sometimes. So often we get a mixed or swirled flavor and the bites don't seem to vary much from spoonful to spoonful. That is not the case here. I got a ton of fudge in my second serving and I almost thought I tasted coffee for a moment. The flavor just gets that complex or whatever word you want to use. I don't know what it is but the cherry and fudge definitely have a unique relationship in this one. If that has you curious, I say give this one a go.

Verdict?  surprisingly complex
Buy Again?  on occasion

  1. It was good, I enjoyed the flavor combo, and I would consider buying it again, but it's not one that I would go out of my way to get. What I missed was having those nice, big hunks of cherry like you get in a really good cherry vanilla ice cream.

  2. My only thought is that -everyone- does that, it was nice to not have that for a change. this way you go to the store and you can pick whatever chunk or non-chunk mood you are in for.
