Friendly's Chocolate Peanut Butter Pretzel Ice Cream

[New for Dec 2014 / Jan 2015, back for January 2016]
This one was hard to resist the first time, but then when I saw it again by work, and for just $2.50, I gave in. [warning, I've realized the camera has burnt out on my phone, so I have trouble in bright light and low light, it's only happy in the middle]

Friendly's Chocolate Peanut Butter Pretzel Ice Cream
Chocolate ice cream with swirls of peanut butter and chocolate covered pretzels

Well, at least it's full, and I can see the pretzel bits already.

I don't waste time and dig right in. The swirl is a dry peanut butter, definitely on the natural side that's more peanut butter flavor than sweet creaminess.

The pretzels have varying levels of crisp-ness. It's a little weird because seem to be crunchy and stale at the same time.

Sorry, I'm not saying a lot yet.... but I think the flavor profile is growing on me. It's not as sweet and chocolaty as I expected, it's more complex then that, but it's not bad.

On Second Scoop: Yeah, I wasn't really verbose on the first try, and that will kind of continue here. I think the problem is the pretzel inconsistency. Yes, this is a common theme in pretzel ice creams, but it's annoying here. The pretzel bits should have a thicker chocolaty shell that not only keeps them crunchy, but also adds a needed sweet balance to the dry peanut butter flavoring. Ahhh, frustrating. It's not that it's a bad base despite being a bit dry in texture as well. Let me put it another way. If I was blind folded, I would never guess this was made by Friendlys.

Third Scooping: Ok, I figured it out. The thin chocolate coating doesn't really stay on the pretzels which has lead to their staleness. If you want to try this, I wish you freshness, but don't get your hopes up.

Verdict?  Freshness fail
Buy Again?  nope

  1. Interesting, this flavor never made it to my parts of NJ. Despite it's staleness I will keep an eye out!

  3. It's here in MA. I thought it was good. Maybe a little fresher because I live a hop, skip, and a jump from the Friendlys HQ. (Wilbraham).

  4. @Tom & ZX, glad to hear you had better luck than I! Maybe i'm just not meant to enjoy pretzels in my ice cream.

  6. My mother and I were at supermarket in SUMMER of 2015, here on Long Island, saw this unusual brand new ice cream, decided we'd give it a try. EXCELLENT! It became our FAVORITE ice cream. DELICIOUS! Bought several boxes. Okay, then find out it is seasonal, so surmise summer 2016, buy again. lo-and-behold, came out in January-February 2016 ! Angry! Missed it. OK, figured 2017, check in winter, January-February. Been checking and checking and checking. NOTHING. Waiting to see this summer. Got address for CEO-President at friendlys, to write but never did, yet. ; dont understand how it is seasonal. Not like shamrock shake for March or egg nog for december. WHERE IS IT???? IF MANY PEOPLE OVE THIS ICE CREAM AND IT SELLS OUT FAST. WHERE THE HELL IS IT? Pretzels make the ice cream, which has pretzel in the title. THIS IS THE BEST FLAVOR EVER!Demand Friendlys carry it always.
