Wegmans Nutter Batter Ice Cream

[New for 2014] I had an hour to burn before Guardians of the Galaxy started up last week, so I decided to treat myself to some peanut butter ice cream. Rather than hitting a local scoop shop or cold stone or B&J's, I headed to Wegman's for a delightful sounding ice cream.

Wegmans Nutter Batter Ice Cream
Vanilla ice cream with peanut butter dough, caramel & peanut butter swirls

If you think about it, how often do you see vanilla ice cream with a peanut butter swirl? I mean, there is zero chocolate involved with this ice cream. Vanilla is a very... reserved choice if you ask me, but I do like the logic behind it. Rather than being like every other flavor on the market, they are instead going to give us a mild base to showcase the swirl and bits.

The swirl? Yeah, it's good. It's a bit salty, but not too much so. It's got a fairly natural vibe to it without being like a straight, bland peanut oil flavor. It's definitely peanut butter, it's thick, and it's very enjoyable.

Then, there are the fun dough chunks everywhere. For me it's not an added blast of peanut butter flavor, but it's a great textural change. How can you not love these chunky bits mixing with the nice flavor coming from the swirl? Answer, you can't.

In the half pint I ate, I only picked up the caramel once, and it was brief. I'm not even sure I should really comment on it except that I would be interested in studying the caramel/peanut butter dynamic more in the future. Yes, I should have kept digging for more, but it's not like I could have brought the ice cream in to the theatre with me, nor would it wait for me until after the movie was done.

Overall, yes, I like it, especially at the nice price of $2.69 for a premium pint. The vanilla ice cream is fine, but I do still question it's use here. I like the change of pace, but at the same time, I wonder how epic this would be with chocolate? Or would the chocolate somehow drown out the peanut butter dough? Questions, questions, questions, but who cares, I look forward to enjoying another of these pints again in the future.

Verdict?  Enjoyable
Buy Again?  Yeah

  1. This looks and sounds amazing. I have never heard of this company or have seen their products anywhere, so I am jealous for those who are able to get their hands on this batch. Peanut Butter cookie dough needs to be in more ice creams and I love the idea of combining caramel and peanut butter together in a vanilla base. A chocolate base would definitely have muted the flavor of the cookie dough due to its rich potency. Also, I am surprised that companies such as Edy's or Breyer's have not yet made flavor with Nutter Butter cookies mixed in yet because I think that would be a big hit. I guess there's always next year.

  2. I recently picked up TH's Peanut Butter Ripple which features a vanilla base with PB and I was shocked how different and delicious it was. Question for ya though, where did the other half of the pint go if you only ate half? TELL ME you didn't throw it out ;)

  3. @Stride: mmmm, nutter butter shakes, nutter butter blizzards.... but agreed, lost marketshare without a nutter butter ice cream

@D: sorry, second half "went away"

  4. Boy they really went out of their way to be referential to Nutter Butters, while still keeping plausible deniability. See, it says "batter" like a baseball batter... and where do you eat peanuts? A baseball game! Besides, it has caramel in it, which your cookies don't have. Case dismissed!

Cookie spread has been a waxing trend over the past year, with Biscoff Spread, Trader Joe's Cookie Butter, and Gooey on the Inside. I wonder who will be the first to come out with a Biscoff ice cream? Certainly it would be more popular in Europe than a flavor based around peanuts ;P

  5. @Josh: Haagen-Dazs already took a swing at biscoff with their limited spiced biscuit flavor, plus trader joe's has a new cookie butter flavor that just came out (review coming as soon as my store stocks it!)
