Blue Bunny Hot Chocolate Con Churros Ice Cream

[By Nick, 2014-2015] When Dubba informed me that Wells was going to be sending us free samples of all their new 2014 products, I instantly called dibs on this one.

Blue Bunny Hot Chocolate Con Churros Ice Cream
Cinnamon Spiced Chocolate Ice Cream with Cinnamon Sugar Churro Pieces

The reasons are quite obvious. I love cinnamon but ice creams that utilize it are few and far between. Secondly, they’re adding churros to the ice cream! How could this possibly not be a winner? (Quick Note: Blue Bunny remembered I prefer reviewing pints but this flavor is also available in their larger container)

Well this ice cream isn’t going to be winning any beauty contests. Let’s dig down to see if it looks better. Nope, I think it might have just gotten worse. I’m just going to blame the cinnamon in the ice cream for the appearance and have my first taste.

Okay well that’s not what I was expecting. They really should change the description of this to chocolate infused cinnamon ice cream. The sweet cinnamon flavor dominates the chocolate. Honestly, if it wasn’t for the color and hints of cocoa, I wouldn’t have thought chocolate was involved at all. Now this isn't necessarily a bad thing, especially for cinnamon lovers such as myself. I just thought it was something to note.

As for the churro pieces? Well, their flavor is reminiscent of a traditional churro, adding butteriness and even more bursts of delicious cinnamon sugar. However, the texture is all off. When I think of churros, I think of their crisp, flaky texture. What we have here are denser and more crumbly. I’d say they’re more among the lines of cinnamon sugar shortbread cookies, not churros. To be honest, I think this might have been a smart move on Blue Bunny’s part. While I’d love for there to be authentic churros incorporated, the more I think about it I’m not quite sure they’d fair all that well in the freezer.

Overall, this is a solid flavor but it just doesn’t live up to the hype I built up for it. If I had to make any changes, I would either dial down the cinnamon in the base or include some sort of fudge swirl so I’d actually be able to taste the chocolate more. If you love cinnamon, I’d say give this one a go. Just don’t get your chocolate expectations up too high like I did.

Verdict?  Strong cinnamon flavor throughout.
Buy Again?  Maybe, but like I said, I’d add more chocolate to it.

  1. 100% off topic, so feel free to delete this, but you and Dubba need to get over to Walmart and pick up the Sams Choice Coffee+Donuts, Moose Tracks, Sea Salt Caramel, and Chocolate Peanut Butter and get them reviewed, as they have started to receive some other rave reviews.

  4. I love cinnamon flavored ice creams, too, so I am glad Blue Bunny made a really cool and unique recipe like this! For cinnamon to dominate the flavor of the chocolate, there must be very little cocoa added because cocoa is so robust that it should be the dominate flavor. Kudos to Blue Bunny for this cool creation!

After having this, would you choose this over Cinnamon Buns by Ben and Jerry's and Cinnamon Bun Fun ice cream by Edy's?

  5. Stride, Cinnamon Buns is my favorite B&J's flavor and there's no competition when ti comes to that flavor. However, I'd easily rank this above Cinnamon Bun Fun.

  6. Nick, I see you still haven't had Peanut Butter World if you are making that B&J CB declaration. Find yourself a Target young man. Although I guess it's arguable.

  7. Anon, every time I go to Target they're out! Living in the middle of no where sucks a lot. Still it wouldn't change the fact that Cinnamon Buns is far superior to this flavor.

  10. Jase, yeah Dubba has already reviewed it and I was actually finally able to pick it up yesterday. It has always been out of stock when I would go to Target.
