BEHOLD.... The Cake Shake
(courtesy of my daughter)

So, how's everybody doing? Me, I feel like I've been hit by a large caliber vehicle. See, yesterday started off simple enough. The plan was to hit Mystic Aquarium and then hit Mystic Drawbridge Ice Cream, much like Scoopalicious did a few years back. Unfortunately baby boy was a bit off yesterday, and after 2 hours at the aquarium (at a cost of $80), we grabbed a cheap Wendy's lunch and headed home for his nap.

Thing is, he wasn't the only one running on empty. I took a nap too, and when I woke up, I knew I needed a snack but I just couldn't figure out what. I grabbed some chicken and put my decision off a few hours. Thing is, I still couldn't decide. Do I go for another slice of CSC Midnight Delight or do I make myself a shake with BB Triple Chocolate Cake? I can't seem to muster the brain power to figure it out, so my daughter chimes in and goes "Why don't you make a shake with the cake?"

Whoa! Hmmm, I never thought about it that way. I try to tell myself that it's a crazy, childish idea, but deep down I can't help but wonder if she is on to something. My daughter has always been a great eater and she is my sidekick on many of my weekend ice cream adventures, so I realize I have to give this a try.

I start by slicing up a third of the cake into fairly thin slices.

Next goes the milk. I don't let it sit long because I worry the cake will get soggy.

TADA! To my surprise, the cake broke up into a million little pieces!

Success, we have made the very first CAKE SHAKE (copyright my daughter)

Now I mixed this with a just a fork, yet it still seperated perfectly. The fudge didn't really blend, so I happily scooped those bits out and ate them. How does it taste? Well, this one gets big points for being different. It's definitely a curious texture and maybe not something you would want to do all the time, but it's also very unique. There are all these soft little cake bits swirling in every sip.

This was a great first try at the cake shake. Next time I would definitely roll with some chocolate milk and also scoop in some extra chocolate ice cream from another source. The shake was just a bit thin, plus spacing out the cake bits a little wouldn't hurt. Technically you could strip out some of the cake hunks in the beginning instead of adding extra ice cream, but that seems like a waste.

To my daughter: Good Job!

Disclaimer: I can honestly say I would never have thought of mixing cake and ice cream like this, but apparently Square Burger in Philly already has. You can find glowing reviews here, here, and here. The fantastic thing is that they use the splended treat known as Tastykake's Butterscotch Krimpets for the cake base.

  1. You know... I've never had a butterscotch krimpet. But now I'm on a mission from God.

    I think ice cream cake shake is a fantastic idea... particularly with that chocolate fudge icing. Your kid is a smart cookie.

  2. I would love this. I always put cake in a bowl and pour milk over it before eating. I will have to make one of these.

  3. @TEM: make sure it's a fresh krimpet from the east side of PA. krimpets are good, fresh frimpets are the best!

    @anon: go for it!

  5. they have a chocolate cake shake at Portillo's which is fab--it looks exactly like this. I think they use their day old chocolate cake to do it--really good stuff

  6. They have Cupshakes (cupcakes+milkshake) at Lick it Bite it Or Both in Austin, TX. And you can choose any combo of cupcake and ice cream flavors.
