I do mean to sprinkle in local ice cream from time to time when I think the flavor (or the visuals) are good enough to be interesting, but then a few weeks will pass and that local ice cream just melts away.... However, I was looking over the pictures from our Friday night ice cream and I was surprised how well they turned out.

Back to the ice cream, it looks pretty great right, but did you pick up on the nuance in the description? For the most part, cookie monster ice cream is a blue ice cream (vanilla or sweet cream) with Oreos and cookie dough. Rota Spring Farm is doing it differently, but does it work?
Yes and no. The first scoop of my double scoop was just jam packed with delicious chunks of fresh Oreo wafer crumble. I was like "wow, this is really good", but then I started to revert to my picky self.
Now, had I been super hungry, I think I probably just would have plowed through the second scoop and then gone on my merry way, but I wasn't, and so I started to really miss that second cookie component.
What it may have been is that the swirl was quietly adding extra sweetness, and while the Oreos were very plentiful to start, they were very slowly losing the war against that sugar rush.
To be clear, this is a tasty, fresh ice cream that had a lot going for it, but in hindsight, maybe I should have used my wife's trick and done a scoop of this and a scoop of.... gee, iunno, let me know what you would have mixed it with. I'm also curious what your favorite cookie monster ice cream is. I assume it's one with two cookie components, but let's see what people say.
Foot note: Incase you aren't familiar, Cookie Monster and Monster Cookie are not the same thing. Monster Cookie usually involves M&Ms and some kind of peanut butter based component.
On Second Scoop: In a funny twist, I had the opposite variation of Cookie Monster today. We stopped by the Uncommon Cow which serves Bliss Dairy ice cream. Instead of missing the cookie part, their version misses the Oreo part. I don't know why, but I found this amusing. Technically it was also fully (light) blue rather than being blue swirled. Cookies instead of cookie dough can be fun, but it did need one more component to bring it all together.
Now I just need to try it from a third place so that I get my Oreo factor and my chocolate chip cookie factor.
The cookie monster I think of is the blue cookie monster. There is a place called The Meadows in Williamsburg and Hampton, Virginia, that does an amazing cookie monster. They just had it this past Saturday. It is blue tinted vanilla custard loaded up with cookie dough bites and Oreo. Another local place sells Hershey's cookie monster which is solid too.
ReplyDeleteI was trying to find the Hershey's version when I wrote this post, but all I could find was their "Caramel Cheesecake Cookie Monster" flavor.
DeleteOh I think it's a local flavor made by Hershey's called slider's homerun. It's a Hersheys exclusive to the Norfolk Tides league.
DeleteOur local spot colors it with peaflower, so you can still taste the vanilla bean ice cream and keep a nice blue color. They do Oreos, chocolate chip cookie dough, and chocolate chips. They don't really break up the Oreos, so you could end up with a full cookie just in your bite. Those are the fun bites!

DeleteI tried Baskin-Robbins Cookie Monster when they had it for flavor of the month, definitely drove return visits that month and a nice email to the company. I did see they have it in their pints now, hope it's the same as in store!

ralphs famous has it called kookie kraze which is blue vanilla ice cream with oreos and cookie dough. I get it every time I go
