McConnell's Chocolate Covered Strawberries Ice Cream

I said I would try more McConnell's, and I did, but I also got covid (as mentioned in my last post). I somehow managed to wait almost six years before getting it, and let me tell you, I am not a fan. It wasnt until the end of the first week that I realized that I had lost my sense of smell (for the most part) and that in turn dulled my sense of taste. Both are on the mend, but please be aware that I wrote the first scooping without realizing that things were amiss.

McConnell's Chocolate Covered Strawberries Ice Cream
sweet cream ice cream with strawberry preserves  and dark chocolate

nice and busy

I scrape just a tiny amount to make this delicious shot.

If i try to scoop deeper, these three frozen strawberry chunks thwart my progress.

I decided to try the early scrapings, and overall, it's tasty of course, but the frozen strawberries are adding a little too much water to the mix. The crackly chocolate is definitely fun. Ok, let's let it temper a little more...

ok, I'm getting the hang of this. You have to scoop under the strawberries, not through them.

Another shot of the funky chocolate.

My biggest "complaint" is that there isn't a ton of strawberry flavor here, and I do love a high quality strawberry ice cream. Would it be wrong to put a little strawberry Nesquik on a 9 dollar a pint ice cream? I might next time.

Quality is obviously here, and the chocolate adds a lot of fun texture, though not necessarily a ton of chocolate flavor. it's more of a stracciatella then anything.

So, I like it, don't love it, but I pretty much always say I want more strawberry flavor in my strawberry ice cream.

...and now to finally read the description: Oooooh, it's strawberry preserves, that makes sense why it's so icy now! and they don't mention "strawberry ice cream" either either.

On Second Scoop: I've been slowly snacking on this one to test how my taste buds were doing. They are coming back, but I don't think they are back fully. That said, I really do love the the chocolate that's in this ice cream. It has really great crackly texture (like the H-D Trio pints). Even if it doesn't bowl you over with chocolate flavor, it's still a ton of fun. That said, this one really needs more strawberry flavor, and I totally added a little bit of strawberry Nesquik to my last serving. This is a high quality ice cream, it just needs more strawberry flavor to showcase that. Lastly, I still dont get the icy jam swirls. I'd much rather have that strawberry flavor spread out across the entire pint.

Verdict?  great chocolate, needs more strawberry

  1. Personally I find the more I let anything with frozen berries or puree temper, the better it brings out the flavor. I also did not get covid til last year...along with bronchitis and pneumonia. The triple whammy slaughtered my taste buds, but so did pregnancy! I definitely think that would dull your palate. I'd say a solid month is what it takes to really return. As an aside, I had the new Blue bell buttered pecan last night. It was so creamy and good! Really a blue bell fav for me.

  2. Glad you are on the mend. I lost my sense of smell from Covid and it's never come back.

    1. I’m guessing going on three years which was the one time I caught COVID. Occasionally I get hints of certain smells but it’s largely gone. I don’t think it’s drastically impacted taste thankfully.

    2. Oh my gosh, sorry to here that! that's crazy. It didnt dawn on me until I tried eating something cheesy and I couldnt taste it, then I tried something else that I knew had plenty of cheezy flavor and I couldnt really taste that either. Thankfully it has slowly come back taste wise, and then smells are still hit and miss (as in I occasionally I smell things during day to day life). hopefully that continues to improve as well. Such a weird side effect of covid. Maybe they'll be able to fix it at some point.
