Jeni's Strawberry Buttermilk Ice Cream

After being shocked by the saltiness of their peach flavor, I decided to cleanse my palette with a much more simple flavor. Let's try a free scoop of...

and cultured buttermilk for subtle tartness

So this one is.... fine. I'm not blown away, but I think there is lingering saltiness on my tastebuds that isn't helping. Let's have a bit of water while the ice cream tempers for a few more minutes.

Yeah, sorry, but I expected more here. For a top tier brand like Jeni's, I expect some zing from my strawberries. I want to really taste those "grown-for-us" strawberries, because, well, I like strawberry flavored things.

If a flavor is going to be mild like this, you'd be better off making it a generic "berry" flavor that's mixed with other flavors. That way the taste may be mild but still complex. Maybe I expect to much from strawberry flavors, but I'm old fashion like that.

Maybe it'll grow on me.... or maybe not.

On Second Scoop: Yeah, it did the opposite of grow on me....  maybe if I mix it with a Tillamook, the two will come together and make a wonderful flavor.... meh, the combo is fine, but no magic happened (technically the Tillamook Strawberry blended better with Turkey Hill's all natural vanilla ice cream).

Verdict?  not diggin' it

  1. Whole Foods has a big sale right now, Jeni's at $5 so I came here to read some old reviews. This one sounds sad :(

  2. oh, are you taking advantage of the 27%/35% ice cream sale? I need to make it there myself before it expires (7/18 if anyone is curious)

  3. Bought two pints, one Jeni's and one Alec's. Really wanted to grab more, might check out another WF selection on the weekend. Just wanted to see some of your thoughts on Jeni's.

Maan, I miss that old Jenni's packaging. The see-through tub and simple writing really stands out. But surprisingly most of your Jeni reviews are not stellar, but that was given the pricepoint scrutiny.

  4. When you are selling at a premium, you need to deliver a premium product as well. Even if something isn't to an individual's taste, they should be able to acknowledge it would blow most people's socks off. Very disappointing.

  5. I love the Peach Jam and Biscuits! The saltiness makes it. I also enjoy the Jelly Donut and Salted Peanut Butter. I’m super interested to try this one. Especially since it has buttermilk.
