Dr. Bombay Ice Cream

2024 Update: Dr. Bombay is coming to Albertsons Company grocery stores this year. It will include the six flavors we know plus an exclusive Fo' Shizzle Almond Fudge flavor. No word if the quality has improved, but pints will be priced starting at $5.99.

[New for 2023] Guess what just popped up at Walmart? Snoop Dogg's Dr. Bombay ice cream. Seven tasty sounding flavors in all. I was excited, but at $5 a pop, maybe I shouldn't buy them all at once. I have been fooled before....

Dr. Bombay Rollin' In the Dough Ice Cream
Dr. Bombay Syrupy Waffle Sundaze Ice Cream

Pint Seal

That seems like a budget friendly ice cream there

The mix-ins are in there though!

Description: cookie ice cream with chunks of cookie dough, choco flakes and chocolate chip cookie swirls. Sounds good right? There's just one teeny tiny little problem.... there's something weird about these mix-ins. The more I had of the swirl and cookie dough, the more the weirdness built up. Granted, the weirdness didn't stop me from eating half the pint, but it's there.

Stepping back for a moment, I think rather than going with a better ice cream and less mix-ins, they went with a more basic ice cream and more mix-ins. Nowadays, that's probably the safe bet, so no major complaints there.

The base is supposed to taste like cookies, but not sure it does though.... but maybe it's the cookie dough factor looping in to everything. It really is odd how the oddness grows too. I was getting more and more mix-ins, but then I was getting the funk, but then I think I was kind of scooping, trying to cover up the funk?

I like the idea here. Flavored based, flavor chunks. flavor swirl. It should work, and to some degree it does. I guess I don't know if they were trying to be different with the cookie dough flavoring, or is this just some weird side effect of whatever ingredient choices they made.

At the moment, I would say "maybe don't start with this flavor?" or maybe I got a bum pint... but I don't think I did... but you never know.

Umm, have I ever seen an air bubble like that before?
(it does smell like waffles though.... or at least like a waffle-y cereal)

It's not as busy as the other pint

Description: Waffle ice cream with waffle pieces and a brown butter syrup swirl. So you know that weirdness I was picking up in the other flavor? Yeah, it's back again. I don't know specifically which ingredient(s) it is, but something aint right here, at least not to me. I don't know how to describe it other than there is a weird sensation in my mouth right now.

I really wanted to like these flavors, they sound delicious, but in reality, they come across as budget ice cream. The base ice cream is meh. The waffle bits are kind of hard, and the syrup swirl was hiding for the most part.

As always, maybe I got bum pints, but bum pints of two different flavors and they both have the same problem? It's possible, but I don't think this isn't freezer burn I'm tasting. It's just something weird in the ways these flavors were made.

Oh well, I tried!  If you happen to give these a try, let's us know if you had a similar experience or maybe something better.

On Second Scoop: These are still sitting in my freezer. Technically my daughter tried the cookie dough and said it was ok, but it was mixed with two other ice creams so she probably didn't get a true sense of how disappointing this one is.

Verdict?  what went wrong?
Buy Again?  nope

  1. I almost grabbed the cookie dough, so I decided to wait for your reviews. I will definitely wait to see if any of the other flavors work. Thanks Dubba.

    1. It is amazingly nostalgic because I have been searching for a cookie base ice cream cookie dough flavor for so many years like 30 years. Ever since I had it at one park growing up. This taste amazing to me and I already ordered (not finished) 6 containers and then tried the s’mores it’s as it states, taste like s’mores. Everyone’s tastebuds are different but I am a fan! Glad you didn’t like it I guess, more for me lol #drbombays #snoopdog #rollininthedough

  3. VL definitely feels like a more premium product (though it too has its flaws) ...and now I'm tempted to go crack up that pint of VL key lime pie ice cream I have waiting for me.

    1. Wow that’s something. I feel like VL is fairly low quality compared to price.

  4. I got cocoa cream cookie dream. It has a very weird taste. I don’t know what it is, but there is an ingredient they use that I don’t like. I am fine eating cheap ice cream, but this is so bad that I am fine with throwing it away. The only other one I might try would be the sherbet.

  5. The cookie doughy one tasted rancid to me. I also tried the s'mores one and it was slightly better but still nothing special. This brand is looking to be a one and done for me on each flavor.

  6. I've tried three flavors:
Cocoa Cream Cookie Dream - Very icy, like frozen low fat chocolate milk, cookie bits are lost in the icy texture, cookie swirl was decent. This one reminded me of Arctic Zero...
Cookie Dough - This one was very reminiscent of Enlightened's cookie dough light ice cream. Similar funky flavor in the base and plasticy dough chunks. The cookie swirl was decent like above.
Brownie - This one seemed best of the bunch, although the vanilla base still tasted "light". Mix-ins were ok; the fudge swirl consisted of two huge chunks of moose tracks type fudge except saltier and thicker
All in all, the common theme was lack of creaminess and light flavor. I was expecting more from ~1000 calorie pints even with skim milk as the first ingredient.
Apparently, the company behind this is HappiFoodi which also brought Barstool Sports' pizza to Walmart's frozen aisle with similar lackluster result.
Dr. Bombay's reminds me of another strange ice cream brand that popped out of nowhere called Madison Brown, same lackluster taste. (also carried by Walmart @ $9 a pint!). Quick Google search reveals no impartial reviews, just bunch of corporate and celebrity marketing.

  7. I just went diggging for reviews. A chunk are people saying they will try it, occasionally you see people saying they had a good pint, but I feel like the majority of opinions are "not that good".

I hope everyone continues to post comments as they try them.

  10. I had tried the Cocoa Cream Cookie Dream. Same issues. Budget ice cream.

  11. Snoop Dog's ice cream, and the mix-ins taste weird?? Hmm, maybe he and Martha were experimenting with his own personal stash of "mix-ins."

  13. I tried the Syrupy Waffle Sundaze and it tasted awful. There is a funky flavor that makes it bitter, which is how I found this page to begin with. I needed to find out what it was! Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to do that… but at least there are others that are tasting the same thing 🤮

  14. I am glad I found your review because I’ve had this the ‘rollin in the dough’ flavor in my freezer for about 2 weeks and every time I think I’ll try another spoonful, I remember why I’m not eating it. There is a bitterness there. I’m not sure if it’s the swirl or the dough pieces or both..maybe the chocolate? I’m about to toss it now thanks to you confirming what I was tasting. It’s almost like my tastebuds are telling me not to eat it. :( ..and I really wanted to try the waffle flavor. Oh well.

  15. I am glad I found this review, because I thought I was imagining things. I got the Waffle flavor and had the same reaction: there is a weird bitterness there that is just off-putting. The base ice cream was creamy and tasted fine. The waffle pieces were chewy and bitter. Glad to hear that someone liked the Brownie flavor cause I got that one for my husband and he is picky about his ice cream.
I got a lower price due to a special promotion, which is good, cause I would not buy them again at $5.00 a pop.
