Tillamook Caramel Toffee Crunch Ice Cream

Well, I did it, I finally bought a container of Tillamook ice cream. See, Tillamook is more of a west coast thing because they are based in Oregon (farmer owned since 1909!). Their website currently lists 30 big containers of ice cream and 13 pints that are a mix of gelato, custard, and ice cream. They also have 6 ice cream sandwiches and 2 bars. In other words, they are a pretty well established company. My local options are limited, so what will I try first?

Now I have seen Tillamook at Hannaford too, but since they carry a generic allergen warning, I decided to hold off.... especially since nothing looked terribly amazing at Hannaford. Well, Tillamook is at Stop & Shop now too and I needed something for the work freezer.

I guess that's an ok opening shot. I had hoped for a bit more pizzazz.

That's better right? Not amazing, but better...

Ahhh, why beat around the bush? I'm not impressed. It's $5.99 for a 1.75 QT container but it's certainly nothing special. The three gums on the ingredient list are contributing to a so-so somewhat gummy texture and you all know I hate that. It's not Breyer's bad or Edy's Bad or Friendly's bad, but it's too close to that and nothing to go out of your way for.

Sure, had this been a busier pint, it may have distracted me, but the mix-ins are pretty light. It's a meh base with a scattering of meh mix-ins. Maybe it grows on me, but I won't count on it.

On Second Scoop: Still meh, edible, but meh. Usually I polish off a container before buying another at work, but I've gone through a couple others while there is still a serving or two left in freezer. There's just not nearly enough going on in this container.

IG Feedback: so I posted this up on instagram today to get feedback from some of my fellow ice cream peers. Overall the opinion seems to be that they have some decent flavors but that their mix-in game is kind of sad. Actually, it's kind of funny how the comments were pretty similar and yet from a variety of sources. Because of that, my next choice from them will be based on base flavor and not what mix-ins I may or may not find.

On Final Scoop: (ironically?) my last scooping was the busiest :)

Verdict?  boring
Buy Again?  nope

  2. Tried many flavors from many brands. Tillamook beats them all. We make special trips to Oregon to stick up on cheese and ice cream.

  3. @RG: there was a time when I would post a review every day (with Nick's help ofcourse). I kind of miss those days. Still have a several reviews in the pipeline :)

@Unknown: do their mix-in levels ever disappoint you?

  6. I'm an East Coaster who was super excited about this flavor-- I thought it was practically a gimme of things I love in ice cream-- only to end up incredibly disappointed. :( The mix-ins were super lacking in both quality and quantity and I think something about the base or caramel swirl made the overall taste cloying and unappealing. The chocolate & peanut butter swirl was much better, but not enough to inspire me to return to Tillamook as a customer.

  7. Chocolate Peanut Butter is definitely their best flavor. Those huge peanut butter ribbons are amazing
