Trader Joe's Pumpkin Ginger Mini Ice Cream Cones

[New for Sept 2017] Did you know that Trader Joe's changed their "Hold the Cone" production company this summer? Instead of a 5.9oz 8-pack box coming from Germany, they are now a 7.9oz 8-pack coming from California. I didn't know until 30 seconds ago. I never got around to trying the old version, but when I saw these pop up on TIB today, I knew I should go shopping.

Trader Joe's Pumpkin Ginger Mini Ice Cream Cones
8 mini gingery cones filled with pumpkin ice cream
and white confectionery coating

Can I start by saying that I have had horrible heartburn after eating half the box for lunch? Granted, I made the unwise choice to have soda and cookies as my morning snack and that probably didn't help anything, but OH THE HEARTBURN. There is just so much ginger here that I've been in pain all afternoon. It's nuts. (I apologize for my apparent ginger intolerance).

That said, these things are still pretty fun. You just open the plastic holder inside the box and dig in. They are just so cute and little and fairly crunchy. You don't even have to unwrap them. They even have a dob of white confectionery at the bottom of the cone just to make sure the last bite is the best (well, best to me anyway).

Is the ginger blast coming from the gingery cones? I don't think so. I really think it's coming from the ice cream itself. I have had plain Trader Joe's pumpkin ice cream long ago and while it's fairly bold, it's not as bold as the Pumpkin ice cream found here. Neither the coating nor the cone will mask the ginger, but they do try to help balance things out. For the record, you will taste the cone but not the coating. The coating just adds a bit of sweetness to the start.

I had one and thought interesting. I had a second to round things out and thought I was good. About two minutes later I went and had a third and fourth cone. No worries, they clock in at a mere 88 calories a piece. Eating two cones isn't much more than eating two Oreos, so eating 3 and 4 didn't seem like a bad idea at the time. Oh well, live and learn!

Would I recommend trying these? Only with the ginger disclaimer. I'm kind of shocked they went so bold. And to clarify, I'm not saying this is bold with all the spices, it's definitely the ginger that is going crazy and messing with me. If you try these, let me know what you think.

On Second Scoop: Apparently I forgot to right some follow up thoughts. It's been well over a year, but if I trust my memory, I feel like I tried one or two more and then tossed out the rest. I hate throwing out food, but I do have a threshold of where it's just not worth it to eat something. At some point I will definitely head back to try the other flavors.

Verdict?  so much heartburn
Buy Again?  product line yes but not this specific flavor

  1. I was excited to try these, but ended up being very disappointed. I found them somewhat flavorless and overly sweet. I didn't taste ginger, found the pumpkin ice cream to be very mild, and thought the white confection was far too sweet (and killed any spice flavor). I am so sad these replaced the ginger pumpkin mouthfuls. They were incredible.

  2. I wonder if they are having production issues because JunkBanter didn't get blown away by ginger either. How odd. Maybe the ginger sank to the bottom.... and into my cones.

  3. It nice that they are expanding hold the cone line. I think a crunchy element would be great like crushed pumpkin spice cookies. I hope for a peppermint cone in the holiday season
