Talenti Wild Blackberry Gelato #43

[New for 2016 - Retired] Please excuse the following review because I am so very very very very tired right now that I'm not even sure how or why my eyeballs are open. Wait, I know why, just not how. To pep myself up, I picked up a $3.99 pint of Talenti this morning. I wasn't really sure which of the new stuff I should try next, but I kind of started spacing out as I was staring at the swirl in this one. Now I've never been a big fan of their woodsy black raspberry flavor, but let's see how this one tastes.

Talenti Wild Blackberry Gelato #43
blackberry gelato with a blackberry swirl

Love the speckled look.

I take my first bite and it's everything I want it to be (and everything their black raspberry isn't). It's sweet, flavorful and I'm thinking that I'm going to enjoy every bite. I kind of wish I had a sugar cone to eat this one out of right now because it tastes so much like a nice black raspberry flavor from an ice cream stand.

There is a strange note in the flavor that I cant put my finger on nor can I describe it.... ooooo, swirl! I tried getting a bunch on my spoon but it's flavor blends in a lot with the base. I find another puddle and I can say that it's definitely rich and sweet. (Later on I found another big streak and it actually had to big blackberry bits in it)

Ahhhh, where's Rovo? I need him to tell my what that underlying note is. I do like it, and I am enjoying it, but what is that? That's going to bug me until I second scoop it.

On Second Scoop: I've just had another pleasant serving and that is a good thing. If you've ever had a sweet black raspberry flavor ice cream, you know what this one tastes like. There's no tartness or woodsy notes anywhere. That said, I still taste something minor that doesn't quite click with me. Nothing tragic here, just this thought in the back of my head that won't go away. --- If you try this, please let me know what you think as I've now finished the third and final scooping and I'm pretty sure I will be picking it up again.

One final thought: When I first opened this pint, I wasn't sure if I missed having chocolate chips or truffles or something else mixed in, but by the end, I was fine with their choice here.

Verdict?  a nice premium black raspberry flavor
Buy Again?  yup

  1. Glad there was enough swirl for you to find some with blackberry pieces inside, as the pictures looked rather skimpy (aside from a dot in the first picture, unless some of the striations in the second picture were actually swirls).

Will give this a try if/when my stores get the new Talenti flavors.

  2. you can see the swirl more from the outside than the inside, it's not that plentiful (it matches the base so much that I don't feel that it's not a huge deal). I have a couple more shots of the swirl up close but I wasn't in love with them, but I will add one of them

  3. I'll be on the lookout for this one (it takes forever to get new flavors up here). I also am looking forward to trying the Key Lime Pie.

Talenti's swirls are *never* plentiful. Usually, that's fine, since the base is generally excellent, but sometimes a bit more would have really helped the overall flavor (caramel cookie crunch, for example).

  4. @Michelle: sometimes I feel like their swirls took a hit after they moved to their new, bigger plant. Good luck ice cream hunting!

  5. I really didn't love this one, as much as I wanted to! I completely know what you're talking about with that mystery note, and that's exactly what turned me off. It's not a total flop, but a lot more swirl would have gone a long way for me.

  6. @junkbanter: thanks for making me think I'm not crazy! I wouldn't have minded more swirl either.

  7. I really liked this flavor - it's not as good as raspberries and cream, but it is nice. I gave some to my two-year-old niece and she wouldn't eat any of the swirl. I was fine with that ... More for me! She loved it, otherwise.

  8. I love the black raspberry chocolate chip, so I'm hoping I can try this one out, maybe I'll like it. I just picked up the new vanilla caramel flavor, and it's pretty good, not anything amazing though.

  9. Does this flavor have seeds in it? Thanks.

  10. @uber: if there were, I missed them! (I had a couple of juicy blackberry bits, but that's all I remember)

  11. I think that there is an odd cheese flavor to this one.

  12. I love all of their flavors that I've tried - except this one. I was really disappointed. It had a really strange, bitter aftertaste. I ended up throwing pretty much the whole container in the trash. Inedible.
