Turkey Hill Key Lime Pie Ice Cream

[New for Dec 2013] So Nick and I have a competition going on to see who can try the most limited edition Turkey Hill flavors this year. He took the first point by snagging their Peach Melba froyo, but it's time for me to even the score. Oh, yeah, I should mention that today, January 23rd, is national pie day.

Ok, technically I've already had my first scooping  like two weeks ago and forgot to write my comments down. Basically, I really liked B&J's key lime pie ice cream but was overpowered by Edy's froyo version. This one falls in the middle of those two. It's not overpowering, but it just wasn't really hooking me in either. There was a realness and freshness to the B&J and... well, I guess I can't expect the same pop at less than half the price. It's not bad, it's just that B&J was closer to the flavor and texture of the actual pie.

On Second Scoop: As always, I need to clarify that this is not a bad ice cream, it's just not something I usually look for but I bought it anyway with hopes of greatness. There are tons of graham pieces, but they're addition is a bit flatter than I hoped. They just don't have that gritty, sugary impact that I adore. I actually do like the pureness of the swirl, but it's thin and spread out. Sure it keeps from overpowering you, but I think the pop of the swirl is what I wanted in the base as well. Something still isn't clicking for me.

On Third Scoop: Yeah, I couldn't help myself. I've been thinking about making Key Lime Pie Oreos since episode 15 of the Nosh Show. The Golden Oreos definitely help complete the overall flavor profile.

Verdict?  not bad, I mean that
Buy Again?  nah

  1. I totally agree. I grew up in the Florida Keys and had my share of Key lime pie.

I was really looking forward to this flavor - and it fell flat. The Key lime flavor just wasn't there. More like a very weak lime flavor.

I didn't finish the carton and that's rare for me.

  2. I love graham in ice cream as well but would not be able to get past the key liminess in this one.

Clever idea to use it with oreo's though!

  3. I totally know what you mean Dubba about this one not hitting the mark. On first scoop, I loved it! and then on subsequent scoops it tasted too limey and bitter. Like a bad taste in my mouth. Although I did adore the very graham pieces in this ice cream. I have never had the b&j version, I think I might go on your recommendation and give it a try!

  4. I have recommended Publix fro yo to Nick (if you guys can ever get your hands on it) -- their Key Lime Pie version is fabulous. I like it better than B&J's

  5. Price Chopper (since Market Basket has been avoiding the limited flavors)

  6. Disagree with these naysayers! This is one of the best limited edition flavors they have ever put out! Keep in on the shelf or at least bring it back once or twice each year! Love it!

    1. Agreed! I was just thinking about it 10 years later.
