Walgreens Belgian Chocolate Chip
Delight lowfat Ice Cream

[New? for 2010] I've said it before and I'll say it again: "Yes, Walgreens (the pharmacy) makes their own ice cream". In fact, they are now branching out with no sugar added and light ice creams (there was a fair sized sticker on the freezer pointing this fact out). Now I believe that they've started out with just two delight flavors: Vanilla and Belgian Chocolate Chip. Let's dig in!

Walgreens Belgian Chocolate Chip Delight
Lowfat Chocolate Ice Cream with Chocolate Flavored Chips

(disclaimer, the pint's been sitting in my lunch bag for a good 20 minutes already, and my cold packs are really just cool packs at this point... feels kinda squishy)

It's got a plastic seal on top, nice touch, good start

Just 110 calories per serving...  looks spongy
(and the chips aren't making a good first impression here)

ok, my first bite and wow, that's chocolaty alright!

chocolate chips are pretty small -- thin & 1/4" long at most --- actually, I guess they aren't that thin, at least not all of them (maybe 1/8" thick)

boy we've got alot of air in here, and since it's warmed up a bit, it's not really putting up any resistance (as in very soft, not very thick or creamy)

it's not bad if you can get several chips in your scoop because they distract you from the boringness of the base, but otherwise it's not doing alot for me.

I'm settling into the chocolate now. It was a little offputting at first but I'm getting use to it

#5 ingredient is coconut oil, #7 is butter oil.... I can't say I'm really noticing either.

there's a little somethin' somethin' about this chocolate that I'm really not enjoying. I just got a big taste of something that I do not appreciate....

ok, 60% gone, time to save the rest for another day.

aftertaste is ok, nothing special, kinda makes me want a pretzel.

Ok, so how do I feel about this product? Well, I can't think of any reason to buy it again, let's start there. Am I satisfied? Close enough. Is this well made? With all the great slow churned, cold churned, double churned flavors out there, this is just plain old, unfancy, there's a reason we dont do this anymore, light ice cream.

On Second Scoop: Well I just finished the last 1/3 of the pint and I'm trying to debate how I feel about it. It's not a bad treat and it was only $2.29. There seems to be a little something lingering in the aftertaste that I just can't nail down. A few more chocolate flavored chips certainly wouldn't hurt. I guess I can see buying this in a pinch, but not as a regular treat (unless you live next to a walgreens maybe)

2012 Update: I have never seen this flavor or even this style again. Weird.
