New to Me : Nestle Tandem Review

You know the best thing about ice cream blogging? It's the never ending excuse to go "oh, I need to put that on the blog!"

Behold!! The might of the Nestle Tandem! Woohoo! Seriously, if you've never walked by one of these before, how could you possibly not pick one up?? I was at Walmart and it was in the dollar section and I just couldn't resist. Actually, it was pretty hard trying not to eat this thing on the way home from the store. You know what the funny thing is? This "new to me" treat came out 10 years ago!

Tada! When they talk " Two Treats in One " I just assumed it would be a 50/50 split, but whatever, no harm, no foul. On the left is the ice cream sandwich with fairly thick wafers and speckled ice cream. On the right is the candy coated side, with decent sized almond chunks mixed into the shell. Logic tells me to grab it by the ice cream sandwich size, so I run with that.

First thing I notice? A tangy smell, kind of reminds me of angel food cake. Hmmm, let's check the ingredients. We've got coconut oil in the chocolaty coating and the (ice cream?), plus there are roasted almonds, so maybe that's what I'm picking up on. I take my first bite and I like it. It's a decent shell on some decent ice cream. The ice cream is fairly soft, but not too airy or fake. I notice the speckles in the ice cream continue through the entire treat --- I know this makes sense, but just incase you thought it was two kinds of ice cream, it's not. You know, I'm still getting a bit of that angel food cake taste.

I continue on through the treat, stopping to enjoy the almonds in the chocolaty shell. It's not a forgiving shell, and it is cracking and occasionally falling, but hey, this type of treat usually does that.

Mmm, and now it's time for the ice cream sandwich part. No problems with the wafer. It's got a decent flavor and it's not too dry --- again, granted I've kind of primed myself by eating the first half of the treat, but I'm just not having any trouble. That mild angel food taste does persist and I tried to tell if it was coming from the ice cream or the wafers. Well, i guess that's why I can't lock it down, because it is so mild.

And then it's gone. I think I may have to get another one next time and do a second scoop to doublecheck my opinions. I love that fact that this treat has a very unique design, and overall I enjoyed it, though I am a little bothered by this lingering angel food taste. I don't mean to harp on it, but it's following me around the house like a lost puppy and I'm just not real sure what to do with it.

Verdict?  Fun
Buy Again?  If I could find them!

  1. This is very exciting news. While this product has existed for more than a decade. I have not seen (or eaten one) in eight and a half years. Last sighting was in Silver Spring, MD. I found your blog searching for the subject because my brother just sent me a photo of one in Chahalis, Washington (state). I can't wait to have one!!!

  2. My son and I discovered these at an AM/PM store about ten years ago (the time frame you mention for their introduction) and we used to make special trips to enjoy them. Enjoyed them for about 2 years. And then they disappeared! The horror!

You mention finding them at Walmart. Are they available elsewhere? Can they be bought by the box? I have only seen them offered individually.

  3. hopefully they will be popping back up everywhere! I'm guessing the larger gas stations and quickie marts will have them as well. Wait and see I guess.

  4. They were sold by the box when I was in Vieques (an island off of Puerto Rico)8 years or so ago. Before that, I used to by them in single servings in Aruba when I'd travel that way. Then they suddenly disappeared. They reappeared about 6 months ago in the local (New Brunswick, NJ) 7/11 convenience stores, and now they are missing again. If anyone sees them, please report it immediately! In the meantime, I will check out Walmart.
