Starbucks Strawberries & Creme Frappuccino Ice Cream

[Discontinued before 2013] It was a typical trip to the store when I noticed that the Starbucks coffee section looked a little bigger than usual. At first I noticed the Vanilla Bean Frappuccino flavor but that just didn't excite me enough to pick it up... then I spied the two little pink words "Limited Edition" on a carton of their Strawberry flavored Frappucccino. Well, I can't just let a limited edition flavor pass me by and not try it.

Swirled strawberry and vanilla ice creams with real strawberries

Now the downside here is that shortly after I bought this, I read a fellow ice cream lover's thrashing of the Vanilla Bean Frappuccino. I was concerned, but seeing as how I can't return the container, there was only one thing I could do: Dig In!

It's a fruit based flavor so I have to do the sniff test.
mmmmm, I love the smell of a quality strawberry ice cream

Wow, nice presentation! Sure I love big strawberry bits, but these small bits scattered throughtout the ice cream give it a really nice look. I also like the ratio here - it really let's us know that it's STRAWBERRIES and then creme (well, Vanilla). Note: The pattern you see here has so far been consistant through the entire container.

So I dig in and it's not bad, not bad at all. It's a rich ice cream but not exactly the texture I was expecting. It's very solid and reminds me of something that I can't quite remember. The flavor is right where I like it: middle of the road, not too strong or too weak. I can't say I'm getting any artificial vibes here, no, my only mild compliant would be the somewhat thick and airless texture of the ice cream itself. Actually, complaint it too strong. The only thing standing out is the fact that texture isn't exactly what I expected.

Now the container does show bigger strawberry bits, and they are larger from time to time, but overall they are decorative but overall insignifigant. You don't have to worry about biting a big bit with every scoopful. It's more an occasional medium-ish chunk with small bits everywhere else. The rare big ones do taste just fine, and aren't some cheap freezer burned hunk of something.

I know I found the Starbucks Hot Chocolate Ice Cream rather boring, but this one is really hitting the spot. I know I don't pick up Strawberry often, which does help build up my excitement for such flavors, but overall this is some respectable stuff and did an excellent job of curing my need for a Strawberry fix.

Ice Cream Dino! Careful, this ice cream might bite back!

On Second Scoop: This was Sunday night's dessert and I just had some more and I do still like it. Yes, I'd prefer something that was a little more creamy and a little less smooth, but I have no problem telling you to give this one a try.

  1. Glad you liked this, I picked it up the other day but hadn't tried it yet. I'm looking forward to it more now.

I also bought a Haagen Dazz Strawberry. I thought of buying a container of Strawberry Frosting and a serving of Strawberry Milk and going Wild with all three. :)

  2. OK now you got me wanting to try this flavor! I am still just a little weary because I really don't like the Creme Frapps.

I do however love the Haagen-Dazs Strawberry and thinking about what Hettar said I can't help but wonder how a little frosting swirl would be in it...
