[New for July 2024] You know what's funny? For whatever reason, I've been thinking about Turkey Hill's Late Night lineup these last few weeks, and the plan was to hit a convenience store soon to start trying them. Well, in a fun surprise, my local Walmart finally has a few new treats on the shelf including all seven late night flavors.

Turkey Hill Late Night Ultimate Cookie Overload Ice Cream
Cookie dough flavored ice cream with cookie dough pieces, choco flakes, and cookie crumb swirl

"Cravings have no curfew"

Ummmm, that looks nothing like the press release photo. In fact, I now have some serious concerns. First off is the coloring (aka it's too bright instead of cookie dough beige). Second, you can tell that this isn't the hefty texture of Haagen-Dazs or Ben & Jerry's. Third, it's not that busy. It looks like a budget vanilla flavor with a fudge swirl.

I don't even see any cookie dough in this photo....
I take my first bite and confirm my suspicions. Yes, at 110g of weight per 2/3 cup serving, it's heavier than their current mainstream ice creams, but not by a ton. It doesn't feel substantial..... though at just $3.28 for a faux (14oz) pint, I should have known better. I guess this is meant to compete with the other cheap pint-like offerings like Dr. Bombay.
I had definitely hoped for more grit from the cookie crumb swirl. Granted, I shouldn't have expect B&J's level crumb swirl grit, but I do have found memories of the cookie swirl in flavors like Lady Liberty Mint, and I wanted that same experience here.
As you might suspect from how this post is going, there is not a ton of flavor coming from the base ice cream, which is really disappointing. We used to go through ton's of Turkey Hill's cookie dough ice cream before they ruined it and I had hoped that maybe, just maybe, this flavor might bring some of that magic back. Nope.
Well, this review has been depressing, though your mileage will vary depending on how you feel about their current offering. Me, I'm still stuck on their older stuff. I wanted more here. I would have rather paid $5 for a good pint rather than $3 for this so-so stuff.
On Second Scoop: Pulling this one straight from the freezer does help with my texture (density) concerns, and technically the based does have a mild (and slightly salty) cookie dough flavor too it, but I've still not seen any meaningful cookie dough in the mix. The swirl is fine too, but again, there's not enough of it, plus when you do get it, it overrides the mild cookie dough flavoring. The moral of the story is that while it had good intentions, it does not deliver (aka not bad but not good).
Pricing Note: I should still check a convenience store to see how much they charge for this one, $5 maybe?
Verdict? should have been better (but only $3)
Buy Again? I'll try another flavor in the near future

If you do try another one, make it Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup—I mean, it's not innovative at all, but the execution of the other more interesting flavors lagged even more behind (airy ice cream, lame mix-ins, so-so flavor). I tried all but the chocolate cherry and was disappointed by every one.
ReplyDeleteInteresting. I have an odd affinity for pints like this when they are on the cheaper end. Not frequently but just to try a new flavor from time to time. I don't see Turkey Hill much in the Atlanta area now and definitely not these pints at Walmart. I'm guessing that Blue Bell has that shelf space in this market.
