Ample Hills Ooey Gooey Butter Cake Ice Cream

I don't think I've ever heard anything bad about Ample Hills Creamery over the years, but as you know, I'm not the type to splurge and order online to try them. Well, they recently announced that they can be found at Roche Bros grocery stores and there is one of those right near my work.

Clocking in $7 a pint, I had 7 pints to choose from. Based on this Ample Hills news post, it seems like Oatmeal Lace was the one pint flavor that was missing from the store shelf (and probably the one I would have tried first to be honest). I took a few minutes to decide what I wanted for my 8am ice cream snack and eventually I picked up a pint of...

Hehehehe, cute! (plus I appreciate the seal ofcourse!)

It looks a little freezer burned because of the ice crystals,
but the ice cream at the top didn't taste that way thankfully

How's it looking? Pretty good?
I would dig deeper for a better shot, but I can't seem to dig through the center.

This is the center chunk that did not want to break. It seems as though the cake bits in my pint have dried out.... to be specific, it kind of reminds me of how dry ice sometimes dries out the mix-ins in a shipped pint of ice cream. Is that what happened here? I don't know since I assume they just ship by refrigerated truck from NYC. Hmmmm.

Sorry, let's step back for a second. I take my first bite and I am bowled over by how rich and flavorful this ice cream is. I take a few more bites and start to debate how I feel about it. It's so rich that I'm debating if it's influencing how I'm interpreting the texture of the base ice cream. There's a rich buttery flavor, but is there a buttery texture too? I kind of think there is.

To be honest, it's a bit much at 8am. I go for the cake bits in hopes that it will help balance out the overall flavor. The problem is, my cake bits are very dense. When I cut in to one, they kind of look dried out, and that huge bit that is hiding on my spoon? yeah, well, I thought I might break a tooth or two on it. It was that solid.

The cake bits did help balance it out a bit, but at 20-25% in to the pint, I needed to take a break. I suspect the second scooping will be more balanced out. Also, this hasn't scared me away from trying all of the other flavors. Sure, if they all have flaws I will start to wonder what's up, but this experience isn't enough to scare me off.

For the record, my other choices were PB Wins The Cup, Peppermint Pattie, Just Vanilla, Please, Coffee Toffee Coffee, Chocolate Milk & Cookies, and Baked/Unbaked

On Second Scoop: next time I'm in the office! (don't tell anyone it's in the freezer!)

History note: I totally forgot that Nick had picked up their Star Wars 3-pack.

Verdict?  so rich.... too rich?
Buy Again?  maybe on this flavor, yes on the brand

  1. Ample Hills is selling pints in stores now? That's awesome! Some of the best scoop shop ice cream i've ever had.

  2. Jeni's Gooey butter cake might be my current favorite ice cream, looks like this one doesn't quite measure up. It sounds like this one is literally just base + cake pieces ? I think the swirl in Jeni's takes it to the next level.

  3. @Endless: Yes they are (in stores now)!

@Bagels: yeah, the Jeni's version is pretty amazing, I probably should have tagged it in the review - https://www.onsecondscoop.com/2020/11/jenis-gooey-butter-cake-ice-cream.html

  4. If you are in the Midwest and every stop by a Schnucks grocery store, you should give their version a try. Probably not as good as Jeni's but not bad...especially if you go to their bakery and buy a serving of their gooey butter cake and mix it in!

  6. The Culinaria(Schnucks brand) ice creams are legit. Real premium ice cream and a ton of different flavors...I personally like the S'mores, Sugar Cookie and Lemon Tart! They also just started doing super premium pints.
