Steve's Papua New Guinea Vanilla Bean Ice Cream

[New for 2020] Steve's has been trying to get my attention for the last several months with this bright orange colored pint. I stare at it every time, then remember it's just vanilla, and move on.... but now I'm desperate to try something new.... ok Steve's, fine, you win.

Steve's Papua New Guinea Vanilla Bean Ice Cream
(no description needed)

I'm going to go with no....

The more I look at this pint, the more I don't like it. I'll be honest, it feels a little offensive. I think they could have tried harder to show off the local culture a bit more effectively. It feels like something a middle schooler doodled during history class. There are plenty of companies redesigning their pints with a more effective look. Anyone else not really dig the design?

Anyway, plastic inner seal removed....

beans flecks are always good to see but...

This ice cream is nothing to write home about. The texture is kind of weird, and honestly, so is the flavor. I get that vanilla from different areas tastes different, but the texture kills any kind of mystique here. (I had way more fun with my choctal vanilla world tour)

Yeah, I'm bored from the first bite to the last. It's just not worth the added fat and calories.

Don't forget that Dean's bought Steve's when they went in to bankruptcy. This pint feels like conglomerate Dean's trying to get in the niche market without putting in the proper effort.

On Second Scoop: Scoop two and I'm already modifying my snack. Mixed with some cinnamon and whipped cream, now this one is more interesting to me. I get that Steve's is run by Dean's and so I shouldn't expect anything too impressive, but releasing a vanilla flavor in 2020? Really Dean's? You do have some kind of staff working on new flavors right? No insult to them ofcourse, I'm sure they had a half dozen great ideas and some accounting person went "nope, go with the vanilla". I kid, I kid, I know several very nice accounting people.

Verdict?  boring
Buy Again?  nope

  1. Thank you for saving me from buying this just on intrigue. I've tried other flavors of Steve's newer line, and the only one I loved was the Blackberry Crumble, which I can't even find anymore. Blackout Cake, Banana Pudding, and Chocolate Cannoli were good, not great. Bourbon Vanilla and Salted Caramel were OK. Spearmint Brownie was inedible. You're right, the texture seems a but "different," although I was impressed with the density and creaminess of their non-dairy Chocolate Salty Caramel flavor.

  2. I'm reading this article while eating Steve's Papua New Guinea Vanilla Bean and I have to disagree. I love the rich European like custard like consistency of the ice cream and the vanilla bean flavor packs a punch; it's not shy like most of it's vanilla competitors. I will be buying more of this thick, rich highly decadent dessert.
