Baskin-Robbins OREO Birthday Cake Ice Cream

[New for July 2016] Marvo pointed out that last time I recommended the flavor of the month, it was at the end of the month, but not this time. It's Friday and your weekend mission is to try...

Baskin-Robbins OREO Birthday Cake Ice Cream
chocolate cake flavored ice cream, Birthday Cake OREO cookie pieces,
frosting bits, and a candy confetti ribbon

I may not have gotten the most photogenic double scoop, but that doesn't matter because I liked this one from the first bite. This isn't a strong batter flavor or a strong cookies and cream flavor or even a strong frosting flavor. Instead, the flavors have come together really well to provide something akin to a complex chocolate malt flavor.

Check out that hearty swirl! It's quite solid, not gooey. The neat thing is that despite it's looks, it's not overly sweet. In fact, it doesn't even really stick out that much at all. I'm amazed at how well all the different flavors have come together to become this excellent unified taste.

Even the texture stays fairly consistent. It's not like you go from gooey swirl to gritty cookie to crunchy frosting bits. There is textural change, but it's not jarring. Instead, it's just this nice rich texture that varies mildly from spoonful to spoonful. Yes the frosting bits crunch, but again, you won't suddenly be thrown out of the moment.

Going in to this one, I was worried that this would be a cake batter flavored base, not a cake flavored base. I know it sounds similar but it's not. It's here to merge with the other flavors, not dominate with sweetness or rock a blast of batter flavor. I really like when flavors come together and play nice like this. I don't want a flavor to be boring or flat, but that doesn't mean I want my tastebuds to be tossed around either. I love the happy middle ground.

Will some find this a bit too sweet? Yes, that's possible. We are on the verge of going too far, but all the various pieces of this ice cream puzzle do a wonderful job of keeping each other in check. It's a pretty bold flavor, but in a fun, enjoyable way. Don't go in to this if you aren't in the mood for that at that moment, but if you are, you should really enjoy yourself.

Verdict?  rich. complex. nice job.
Buy Again?  Yup

  1. If your photo doesn't have all of us running out to try this flavor, I don't know what will because that looks delicious! I may be the only one, but I miss the days of when cake flavored ice creams and cake batter flavored bases were the big thing. Some are still around but not as many and it looks like many of the Blue Bunny ones have disappeared. Klondike still has yet to produce either a cake flavored one so maybe we will see a cake/cheesecake flavored Klondike bar in the future if the producers are willing.

  3. I wanted to love this, but I actually did find it a bit too sweet. I think the mint Oreo version they did was much better. It is fun to see them experimenting with different Oreo flavors, though!

  5. I agree about the polar pizza price. I wish that they can sell it by the slice so you don't have to commit to the whole thing. What if it sucked and what you going do with the remainder of the pizza? Throw in the trash?

  6. There are 6 slices to a pizza, I want to say $3 a slice would be a good consumer price point and then they still make an extra two bucks per pizza.

that said, I'm pretty sure Ryan (GrubGrade) said the polar pizza was really good
