Breyers Blasts Girl Scout Samoas FDD Review

[New for 2013] Very early on in the year, I noticed that Edy's ( Dreyer's ) had ditched the girl scout branding of a couple of their flavors. It had been a long relationship, one a lot of people relied on, so why did it disappear? Well, we finally know why.

Breyers Blasts Girl Scouts Samoas Frozen Dairy Dessert
girl scout cookies samoas pieces, coconut and a rich fudge swirl
in a coconut caramel flavored frozen dairy dessert

Whoa! I pull the lid off and I am overwhelmed by the smell of coconut. Wow. This is easily the strongest coconut scented dessert we've ever tried (keep in mind we've had this on the blog).

Well it certainly looks epic. We've got the light colored base, tons of thin fudge swirls, big cookie chunks, and then tiny cookie chunks for added flair. I will jump right in and say this one positive thing: after several bites the texture is definitely better than the M&M Blast (though that's not saying a lot). The good news ends there.

So how bad is this one? Well, my wife hated it from bite one. The next few bites weren't any better. However, she was a trooper and pressed on and finished the bowl. See, the secret is to not taste what your eating, just shove it in quick and maybe you won't notice just how terrible it is. Me? Well, I kind of cheated. With the container in front of me, I aimed for those big samoa pieces first. I tried to work up a nice cookie coating before diving in to this smelly mess. The coconut is just way too strong here. For all the hard work Edy's and Talenti did to get me to like coconut, Breyers has just undone it all. This one is way too strong.

Dear Girl Scouts,

I regret to inform you that you have made a terrible mistake in trusting Breyers with your brand names. Edy's is coming back strong after ditching frozen dairy desserts, so why not stick with them? We just had the pleasant Caramal Coconut Cookie, why leave and ruin your good name?

Sincerely

-Dubba

Well our painful taste test is over.... or is it? My wife goes "ummm, it kind of feels like my tongue is burning". Oh man, I thought it was just my imagination, but I have to agree, the aftertaste is off. It kind of feels like I was licking the rough surface of an oatmeal cookie or something. Actually, it feels like I just laughed milk soaked oatmeal cookies out my nose. I'm now cleansing my senses with some tasty multigrain tostitos.

<several tostitos later> Wait, can I still taste coconut? Ahhh I can! Waaaaahhhhh!!!

On Second Scoop: Ok, the first scooping was pretty harsh and we were admittedly a bit afraid to go back. That hasn't happened in a long time, but sometimes the stars align and that's what happens. Well, it's Sunday now and my wife bravely went back in for a second scoop. Thankfully it wasn't nearly as painful. She set her expectations so low that I think she was a bit more receptive this time. Alright, if she can go back in, I can too. Now my second scoop consisted of just a few small bites, but I can see where the hard core coconut crowd might like this flavor. I still think this will be scorned by most, especially since the Edy's version is a hundred times better. I do feel kind of bad about the burning comment, it's just that the coconut taste is so potent and it sits very unhappily with me. I've always said I've hated coconut so keep that in mind with this review. Do as you must with this flavor, but don't say I didn't warn you.

Verdict?  too much coconut
Buy Again?  Not on my watch

  1. Help me understand. So to your tongue, the experience of licking an oatmeal cookie is comparable to licking a habanero pepper?

  2. I understand your disbelief, it's fine, you are welcome to waste your money on this flavor. That said, yes, it "burned", I didnt say it was a horrible burn or a burning tingling, but there is something really not right about the aftertaste here.

Or are you just mad I don't like oatmeal cookies? If that was the impression I gave, I apologize to you and the oatmeal cookies (which I adore, I just don't lick their rough surface)

  3. The ice cream may very well be awful. With my question I was hoping I could get you to elaborate on your odd description of an oatmeal cookie's flavor.

  4. Dubba, I think sandpaper might've been a better choice of words to get the whole rough surface across=p

  5. Bwahahaha Dubba you're the best!

  6. Ok, I tweaked the last paragraph a little, hopefully that helps!

Again, in no way did I mean to insult oatmeal cookies. I just had some with milk as my mid-morning snack.

  7. This was just repulsive! I thought the coconut had sort of a toasted (burned) flavor and wonder if that's the aftertaste you and Mrs. Dubba got.

  8. I must admit that it's funny Breyer's struck a deal with the Girl Scout Cookie Association after their competetor Edy's departed ways with the Girl Scouts Cookie Association. I guess Breyer's thinks they can top the Girl Scout cookie flavors that Edy's produced. I'd like to see them do a peanut butter ice cream with Do-si-Dos cookies.

  9. Are you going to review the other girl scout cookie flavors?

    ReplyDelete
  10. yup, stayed tuned for the thin mint flavor, say maybe end of this week

  11. Last night I just tried the Breyer's Girl Scout Thin Mint cookie. It was a quick melter....but the flavor was good, and there were large enough pieces in the mix that really brought out the cookie goodness. I am interested to see what you think Dubba....

  12. I love ice cream, and I love reading your reviews. Actually, my dream is to get paid to review food, especially sweet treats. I tried the Samoas last night, and I agree with you. Too much coconut, strange texture (being "frozen dairy dessert" and all), and it does almost taste as if the coconut is burnt. I can't wait to read your reviews on the other new flavors. I'm the kind of person that when I see a new flavor, I have to buy it. Even if I see 3 new flavors at once, I have to buy all 3 cuz I'm too excited to wait.

  13. My favorite cookie are the girls scout caramel coconut cookies. So I tried this ice cream, and it was so bland and had hardly any cookie pieces! I also tried Edy's which was ok but I thought it was a little too mild and again needed more cookies.
You should try Dreyers Slow Churned Caramel Coconut Cookie, I was pleasantly surprised by it because it's a "light" ice cream, but to me it's the best one. It has the most flavor out of all 3 and the most cookies!

  14. I'm surprised you found this bland since it strikes me as anything but (are you a coconut fan maybe?).

I have not tried the edys/dreyers light version yet, but we will at some point!

  15. Haha, yep I am coconut fan! I can understand that people who aren't would find it strong, but I love strong flavors so I usually stick with Ben & Jerry's and gelato. I was actually an ice cream taste tester for a new very small independent company that's coming this year.

  16. Nice! Make sure to check back in with us once it's released, we'll try to track them down.

  17. Thanks for the support! We are going to be in one location in California to start, maybe branch out eventually if we're successful. If we do, or you happen to be in California some time, we'd love for you to try some!

  18. I tried the Samoa cookie ice cream last night I did not have a bad taste in my mouth. I loved this flavor and kind of glad no one else in my family likes coconut.

  19. I will admit to being a major coconut lover.

While I normally steer clear of the Blasts due to the whole "dairy dessert" thing, sometimes flavors pop up that intrigue me enough to sample. This flavor was the second of those to occur.

While I agree that it is somewhat abrasive on the tongue, that tends to happen with toasted coconut. C'est la vie if you enjoy the flavor of it.

I quite liked this "ice cream" flavor, other than the obvious flaw, my only real complaint is it could use more large cookie pieces!

I concede that my nose has been slightly stuffy lately, so I may not be getting the full flavor profile, so I will try, as you have, a second scoop at a later date and report my findings.

  20. You are crazy it's awesome. The more coconut the better. I'm eating it now and if you like coconut you'll love this

    ReplyDelete
  21. Anon, Dubba's not crazy. He just doesn't like it when his burns.

    ReplyDelete
  22. It didn't burn my mouth nor did I taste any burnt coconut in mine. I love coconut btw and didn't find it to be too much or too little. There were also tons of cookies in mine. This quickly became one of my favorite ice creams.

  23. I love coconut butt didnt like this, I actually returned it to the store, first time I've ever done that. My biggest issue amongst alot of what others did not like was the cloying sweetness. I could not imagine getting through the quart.

  24. I love coconut and Samoas (aka Caramel deLites) are my favorite Girl Scout cookie. My problem with this ice cream is that it isn't ice cream. It's "frozen dairy dessert" and it's way too soft and not nearly creamy enough. I can scoop it out of the carton with a plastic spoon when it's right out of the freezer! Not worth eating. Instead, I'm just going to stick a Samoa or two in a dish of (real) coconut ice cream and drizzle some caramel sauce over it.

  25. Adding my favorite Girl Scout cookie to Breyers ice cream has bumped this ice cream into my top ten favorites, the toasted cocoanut is simply awesome. If it burns, perhaps you have a food allergy. The mint flavor has large chunks of cookie that are rather bland. Overall goodness, though. Not quite as good as the Samoas.

  26. no no, we are not allergic to coconut... just terrible ice cream WOOT!!! (and for proof, my wife adores samoas)

    ReplyDelete
  27. Maybe I'm crazy but this ice cream DOES taste like Samoas cookies to me!. It's got great flavor IMO but then again I'm not very picky when it comes to ice cream. I guess if one doesn't enjoy Samoas cookies then they probably won't enjoy this ice cream . That's the only reason I could think someone would not enjoy this ice cream.

    ReplyDelete
  28. @Ryan: call it what you will, just don't call it ice cream. It's harder to take your "great" comment serious when you havent even read the carton. I am not a huge samoa fan yet I still appreciate Edy's take on this concept Then on the flip side, my wife adores samoas and still hated this flavor. Samoas aren't the problem, it's breyers.

  29. I just had some a few minutes ago and it's giving me a licorice flavor in my mouth. I'm somewhat appauled and yet attracted by it. Such a mixed sense of flavor and texture. Yes, the coconut is overpowering and was used too strongly.

It could be a good flavor had they not ruined it.

  30. Frozen dairy dessert...not even ice cream. Very disappointing, way too much coconut taste.

  31. I am coo-coo for all things coconut. I use coconut shampoo, body butter, cook with coconut oil, well, you get the point. I was so excited to try this "ice cream" since Samoas are my favorite GSC, ever! I'm still on the fence about it but I'm starting to fall off and not in a good way. I am very sensitive to artificial sweeteners since I suffer from migraines and they are a trigger for me and I've scanned the ingredient list and don't see any but 15 minutes after consuming a bowl of this stuff I still have an unsavory aftertaste in my mouth. The texture isn't right, the flavor is just too artificial and the aftertaste lingers FOREVER! I want so badly to love this but I'll just stick with fighting my daughter for the cookies once a year and eat the Haagen Dazs Pineapple Coconut ice cream when it goes on sale.

  32. I am a hard-core Breyers Chocolate ice cream fan. To understand why - just look at the list of ingredients. My grocery recently had a 2-4-1 sale on Breyers so I got my usual chocolate and then picked up a samosa. First bite - Yuck! When I looked at the list of ingredients, I knew why. Not Breyers usual wholesome ice cream. My first and last box of samosa ice cream.

  33. Linda, FYI: most Breyers flavors are NOT ice cream anymore.

  34. so sorry you didn't enjoy this. it rapidly became my family favorite. will definitely buy it again. love everything about it.

  35. SUCH A TERRIBLE DISAPPOINTMENT! Every girl scout cookie season i buy a case of samoas & i always eat them w ice cream; coffee flavored is exquisite! But ohhh, all i taste is coconut. I AM SO SAD 😪😥😓

  36. Oh we totally loved it in our house. I can't find it at pur Walmarts now. So disapointed.
