New Orleans Ice Cream Co.
White Chocolate Bread Pudding Ice Cream Review

Oh man, where do I even begin this review? I know, let's start by thanking the fine folks of the New Orleans Ice Cream Company for sending not 1, not 2, but 8 pints of their "all natural, hand crafted, ultra premium ice cream". Oh I love ice cream and our friends to the south don't mess around. Here, go over to their site for a second, and then come back here, I'll wait....

Back? Good. Their site is a little behind so it only lists 12 of their 22 robust flavors, but you get the idea --- UPDATE: You can see (and order) most of their flavors on icecreamsource.com

I know it sounds like I'm exaggerating, but I'm looking at the pints in my freezer and I don't even know where to start. For example, there's a peach melba flavor. Ok, sounds straight forward right? It's probably vanilla ice cream with peaches, but no no no my friend. There's also almonds and a raspberry swirl! Who thinks of these things? I know I don't. How am I ever going to run an ice cream company when there are so many creative and talented people out there on this fine planet of ours?

I perused all 8 pints and I decided to go with the blue one. Seriously, how am I suppose to pick? Every flavor is funky and deserves to go first, but this one says white chocolate and I think I like bread pudding... well, I know I love bread, and I love pudding, so that's the same thing right?

Ok, let me rattle off the description for you: White Chocolate Bread Pudding is "our version of a New Orleans Classic Dessert Has Chunks of White Chocolate Bread Pudding That Hints of Custard and Bourbon Sauce." I'm no English major, but I'm confused. I mean that literally, like, I'm badly confused. I know my dessert knowledge is limited but I do see "white chocolate" so I think that will do it for me...

That's not true, I'm still confused, so I check the ingredients --- NICE! Look how short the ingredient list is! I think technically they might be cheating since they don't list what's in the white chocolate.... and wait, for that matter, pretty sure "custard" doesn't grow on trees. I've been hornswaggeled!

Oh whatever, I don't actually care. I'm hungry, let's dig in!

The top is off and we've got a good first impression here. I'm liking the nice gooey ribbon, I see bread pudding bits everywhere, and well, we've got one lone white chocolate chunk.

I've dug in a bit and now we've got another white chocolate chunk and one immovable bread pudding piece.

Oh man! I'm still digging and the piece still ain't moving. It's solid and it's not going anywhere.

Success! I've finally excavated the bread bit and cut it in two. It looks like a little mini loaf of bread. It's solid and tasty and well, unexpected. No need for a penny, this thing would dwarf it. Finding something like this is always kind of fun. Obviously you can't get a ton of these because they are huge (I've only found 3 or 4 through the first 70% of the pint).

How weird, if I think about eggs, I taste the eggs in the "hint of custard". If I forget about it, then I don't. I don't think I've ever tasted such a strong egg flavor in an ice cream (except in maybe an egg nog flavor). It's always funny when there are so many flavors going on that you can easily get lost in one or the other.

There aren't many white chocolate chunks. I usually complain about a lack of chips, but this one is plenty complicated enough without them. Oh sure, a nice coating of white chocolate sauce would be awesome right now to balance things out, bring a sweet balance to our treat, but hey, we're trying to be different here.

Wow, the bourbon sauce adds a funky flavor that I can not describe because I don't drink. I want to say it reminds me of like a soda where there is too much syrup. There's almost a tingling to it, though bite is probably a better word. This is one funky pint and I have been at a complete loss of words to accurately describe it. Sure I've been trying, but my simple palette is no match for such a unique flavor.

On Second Scoop:  I need to man up and admit that this pint is of the alcoholic persuasion. I keep trying to think of what it reminds me of (licorice? anise?), but the truth is that it has that mild alcoholic burn to it and it seems to be omnipresent. I thought maybe the bourbon was in the swirl, but I haven't seen much of the swirl but the bourbon is all I taste. Sometimes it's got that banana bread vibe (sans bananas), but other times it's just the mild burn. I guess the big news here is that I'm not scared off like I was with bonaroo buzz. It's strange to me, but it's still good ice cream and I still want to finish it... oh I want to finish it. I could have easily polished this off on the first scooping because of it's uniqueness. Nice job New Orleans, let's see what else you've got.

Verdict?  Wow, now that was unique.

  3. I'm dying to try some of these ice creams but would have to get them shipped to me. Just curious if you got them shipped to you and how well they held up?

    1. Yup, they were shipped in from icecreamsource.com (courtesy of New Orleans Ice Cream Company). Shipping is expensive, but they traveled well.
