When it's gotta be all natural

New Product Line: Even though it's a bit far to go, it's always fun going to a big Whole Foods grocery store and checking out the all natural ice cream freezer section. We were checking out the usual suspects when something new caught my eye.

That's right, Living Harvest tempt --- Non-dairy frozen dessert made with hempmilk. It comes in five varieties: Vanilla Bean, Mint Chip, Coffee Biscotti, Chocolate Fudge and Coconut Lime. We just saw hemp milk for the first time during our last Whole Foods visit, so you can imagine our surprise when we found out Living Harvest makes frozen desserts as well. I was tempted to buy it but wasn't sure it would make it home, maybe next time!

Other News: Tip Top Ice Cream (out of New Zealand) says they have perfected how to wrap ice cream in marshmallow! Their first attempt was some nine years ago, but they have announced the first commercially viable treat will go on sale soon. The new rocky road inspired treat will be part of their Memphis Meltdown product line -- be sure to check out the link, their stuff looks awesome!

Poll Results: I keep forgetting to post the old poll results so that we can have a new poll.

What's your least favorite thing to put in the freezer?

Anything Artificial            77    (43%)

Tart Frozen Yogurt         32    (17%)
Any Frozen Yogurt         15    (8%)
Nonfat Ice Cream           34    (18%)
Lowfat Ice Cream           2     (1%)

Mini Containers              10    (6%)
Single Serve Treats         9    (5%)

Votes total:  179

My first thought was "Wow, people feel pretty strongly about artificial junk in their treats", but then I realized something. If you total all the non-ice cream products, you get 46% of the vote. Is that a hint to keep froyo and lowfat talk to a minimum? No worries, this is the ice cream blog, all are welcome, though some may be ignored (cough)Edy's(cough).

Ok, one more note: Speaking of Edy's (Dreyer's), I passed by their new limited edition Toy Story Lemonade Swirl Ice Cream the other day. It's lemon sorbet and vanilla "frozen dairy product" (It's yet another skim milk fun flavor). If you try it, let us know.

  4. Found the Toy Story ice cream. It was ok. Not what I was expecting, but ok. I can't say that I have ever had sorbet mixed with ice cream though. I put a scoop over fresh out the oven brownies. I'll try it next time without the chocolate and perhaps it will be better!

  5. I LOVE the Toy Story Ice Cream. Bought it on a whim two weeks ago and ate the entire carton in two days. It tastes like a lemon cream pie. The vanilla is creamy 9as far as reduced fat ice creams go) and the lemon sorbet is tart. Nice mix. I went back the next day to buy 2-3 more and they were all gone. I had to wait two more weeks to buy more. You should definitely try it.

  6. Agree with Mimi--Edy's lemonade swirl ice cream is quite nice. Very refreshing: Reminds me of the filling of a lemon icebox pie (or even a key lime pie). A great complement seems to be a graham cracker or--even better yet, for some reason--a Dutch windmill cookie (you know, a flat almond cookie with spices; I suppose the proper name is speculaas--and I also suppose that the almonds are optional).

  7. I was at a baby shower recently where the Toy Story Lemonade Swirl was served with cake. There were 50 or so people at the shower and we all went crazy over this product. I also ate a gallon in two days and just today bought more. I just e-mailed Dryers to keep this product on the shelves. It's so good it's unbelievable - never tasted anything like it.
