Cherry Cheesecake Sunday Showdown

Ok, the freezer aisle is "pretty" (aka very) boring right now, so let's do something that we haven't done in over two years. Let's have a showdown!

Philadelphia Cherry Cheesecake Crumble
Oui Cherry Cheesecake Layered Dessert

They are the same height which is kind of funny

Time to unseal the treats

"Say Oui to Feeling Fancy"
(I mean, it does look fancy, albeit a bit small)

round 1: fruit flavoring: We have opposites here. Philly doesn't have enough flavor, and Oui has too much. To be honest, I mixed a few small bites of each to get to the desired fruit ratio that I was hoping for.

round 2: texture: Oui is definitely more dense, but there is less of it. Philly is bordering on being a bit too light but there is more of it (so it's a longer lasting treat). I do like the density of Oui, but there is a bit of punch coming from the treat as a while (definitely possibility that all or most of that is coming from the fruit factor though)

round 3: graham! Philly goes with a very crunchy topping while Oui goes with a very dense base. Yet again, I don't love either approach. I'm fine with having to manually add the topping, but it's too crunchy. The Oui base is fine and all, but there's too much of it for this application. Pull the quantity of the base back 30% and give me a bit more cheesecake filling to balance out the overall flavor.

round 4: this match is so close, let's factor in price too. The Oui version is going to be about 20% more expensive, but is that really terrible when it comes in those cute little recyclable glass containers? (yes, I understand that plastic is recyclable, but the glass is more easily recycled than the #6 plastic)

round 5: calorie difference? no actually. In fact, the nutritional facts are pretty similar for these two treats. Geez, can I not get a tie breaker anywhere here? Technically Philly has one more gram of protein, but Oui is 6% heavier.

So after all of that, I can only sum it up by saying that I would have preferred that my treat be somewhere in the middle of these two similar yet different approaches. I want more flavor than Philly, but not too much like Oui does it. I want my graham less crunchy than Philly, but just a bit more textured than Oui.

Hmmm...  how about this. Oui feels a bit more decadent, while Philly could use a little more heft to it, and I want that heft coming from the cheesecake, not the topping. Actually, when I second scoop these, I think I might smash up the graham topping more before I dive in to the treat.

On Second Scoop: Well, smashing up the graham only worked so well, but overall I think my opinions are still pretty much the same. Oui will leave you wanting more treat, while Philly will leave you wanting for a bit more fruit flavor (and a bit less crunch). Both are still fun, and if you've been hesitant to try them, just wait for the next sale and give it a go.... oh, just had one final thought. If you are looking for which one is cheesier, than the answer is Philly. Oui is more of a fruit treat than a cheesy treat.

Verdict?  fun enough

  1. This was great, thanks Dubba. Love to see more of it! Also, you aren't wrong on the plastic. Even if it can be
recycled, most of it is not from what I've seen. It seems like it's mostly a lie we are told to make us feel good about using so much of it.

  2. I'm a bigger fan of the Oui, but I think the recyclable factor is a tricky one. Where I live, there are no glass recycling drop-offs, and it can't be included in the weekly recycle bin pick up. Not a problem for me, since I love saving little glass jars, but it means that a lot more glass gets thrown away than plastic here.

Loved the showdown, though! It would be fun to see more comparisons of stuff like ice cream too. If only I could send you some of the local stuff from NM!

  3. They don't recycle glass? Whoa! I know that plastic #1 is the most recycled of the plastics and the rest if debatable these days, but I thought glass was pretty universally recycled.

I'll see if we can't do more fights, but pickings are pretty slim these days!
