Magnum Mini Ruby Ice Cream Bars

[New for 2020] Has the thought of the pink ruby cacao fad got your tastebuds daydreaming of "unique berry fruitiness"? Like you, I am a sucker for something new, and the fact that both Magnum & Haagen-Dazs (and Kit Kat) have jumped on this hot newness must stand for something right? Let's see if it can live up to the hype!

Magnum Mini Ruby Ice Cream Bars
sweet cream ice cream dipped in ruby cacao

It's so tiny!

I take my first bite and I am confused, like, really confused. What am I eating? This tastes nothing like I imaged. It tastes like... ummmm... like... ummmm... I can't even describe it. It's reminding me of a couple different things, but not in a quantifiable way.

My word is this frustrating. I can not think of what it tastes like. Part of me wants to say.... cheesecake? Or maybe vegetables? I don't know. The shell is kind of icy which isn't helping anything. What are they trying to do to me?

I grab a second bar (since they are only 130 calories a piece), but it doesn't help. I eat this one differently in hopes of gaining insight, but I got nothing. No matter how fast or slow I eat the shell, I just cant describe it only that to say that it's not some smooth melting chocolate here. It seems like it wants to be crunched and not much else.

What a weird treat....

On Second Scoop: A couple of instagram folks gave me a bit of guidance on what they thought I was tasting, and with that help, I think I can agree with what they were saying. The shell definitely has a white chocolate vibe but with a bit of raspberry (tartness?) mixed in. Honestly, it's still pretty weird but at least it makes more sense now. Because the shell continues to have a weird icy texture as well, I'm going to say skip this for now and maybe try one of the Haagen-Dazs ruby products first (I will try them, just not sure when).

Verdict?  weird
Buy Again?  NOPE

  1. I have not tried these, and I wanted to. I might not now. So it's not a fruity taste? That is what I imagined it might be. Is ruby chocolate more like a white chocolate? I thought red velvet was more of a regular chocolate base in essence.

  2. They should've done this as a mystery flavor lol.

  3. @Anne: someone on instagram described it as "sweet white chocolate with a tart raspberry flavor". When I try another on Monday, I'll be thinking of that description.

    @Endless: BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

  4. You ventured out into the crazed toilet-paper hysterical crowds for these dinky-pinky ice cream bars? Dubba, please tell me if these are the end-of-days you have something spectacular to delight yourself with or a secret freezer in your bunker with premium and artesian ice cream pints.

  5. Honestly? We have some ice cream stashed in our chest freezer, but not a ton. I actually bought these on Wednesday before the hoarding craze went in to high gear (my next review will be something that I bought on Thursday in the middle of a very busy wegmans rush). The good news is that most people arent hoarding ice cream --- though maybe they should as it's a milk substitute that lasts forever in the freezer :)

  6. I just had some ruby cacao ice cream at a local ice cream spot that makes their own. You get a little bit of dark chocolate flavor and then it quickly morphs into a subdued fruity berry kind of flavor. Very interesting. My wife didn't care for it. I liked it but it's not something I'd seek out.

  7. I've been waiting for you to review these! I bought some about a month or so ago, ate two and the rest have been in the freezer untouched. There's a weird aftertaste that I can't place. Almost like I was tasting the wooden stick?

  8. It's just a peculiar pink ice cream with added citric acid, which gives it that certain tartness; frankly it does nothing but confuse the brain. Not nice.

  12. It's disgusting!!!! 🤢🤮 And I feel, in some strange way, that I've violated my taste buds. Ever played the game bean boozled by JellyBelly? To me, these bars taste like a very faint version of one of the "bad" beans. And I'm sad about it because I really had high hopes for these Ruby bars 😟😢😭
