Pierre's Black Cherries & Chocolate Chunks Yovation
A Frozen Yogurt Review

Just like Pierre's Hola Fruta, I haven't seen Yovation since... ok, technically I never saw Yovation in a store now that I think about it. Thankfully in 2010 Pierre's was nice enough to send a care package. I was a big fan of the flavors I tried and so I kept waiting and waiting to find Yovation sitting next to some Hola Fruta at Shaws some day, but instead they both disappeared from my life... until now! Yay for Wegman's!

Welcome back to the blog Yovation! You've remembered your Live & Active Yogurt Cultures, very nice. Our green little pint here is Black Cherry Frozen Yogurt with Cherries and Chocolaty Chunks.

A crack open the container and get a big whiff of a very potent black cherry smell. I sure hope it doesn't taste that strong! I dig down just a little bit to bring you the view above. Everything you see is a chocolate chunk except the bit of black cherry in the bottom middle area. If those chunks have you excited, then good news, there's lots of them throughout this froyo.

The very first thing I noticed  was how soft this froyo is. Granted I took a little too long with pictures, but still I don't think that was it. I'm ok with this because it's got a fairly creamy texture for a froyo. Blue Bunny's version had a cleaner taste, but it wasn't as creamy as Pierre's version.

As far as taste? I like it, though these big chunks of chocolate keep getting in the way. They are quite big and I seem to get one in every scoop. I'm not complaining, wait, yes I am. They are fine chunks, no complaints, really, it's just that I like the not-too-potent base flavor, so I wouldn't be opposed if they made a straight cherry flavor that I could snack on with a little less guilt.

On Second Scoop: Ok, I couldn't help myself. I needed to know what a chocolate free serving would taste like. After digging out about 2 dozen chocolate chunks and putting them on my daughter's sundae, I dug into my cherry froyo and I liked it. I had a few decent size cherry chunks in there and while they did add a bit of tang, I didnt really notice them while I was eating. The cherry free areas are mild and pleasant. Overall it's a fairly creamy texture, though there can also be a bit of grit to it. Final verdict is I like this frozen yogurt, even more so when the chocolate chunks aren't throwing my taste buds back and forth (this is not a knock on Pierre's since everyone adds chunks to cherry flavors for some reason)

Verdict?  Respectable froyo

Side Note: Bummer, looks like Pierre's retired the excellent Honey Granola flavor! They've also replaced Toasted Almond with Butter Pecan and they've replaced Cookie Fudge Crunch with Moose Tracks.

  1. It amazes me on how many ice cream/yogurt manufacturers you are able to get your hands on. I don't think all of our grocery stores have half the quantity of manufacturers that you do. I'm envious.
