So, were you wondering what these are?
Well, it's hard to keep a secret when the title of the post tells you what they are - These are two pistachios I found in a pint of Ben & Jerry's Pistachio Pistachio Ice Cream. I guess they say it twice because you will find both brown and green pistachio's in the ice cream... Ok, I just made that up, but it's not like I know a lot about pistachios. The first time I ate a pistachio was just a few months ago when I tried some funky blend of Planters nuts and there were a few mixed in.
So, here is a freshly opened container. Now I have to ask - what in the world was I thinking when I bought this? Sometimes when I'm strolling down the freezer aisle, I am just so hungry that I'm willing to try anything, and this flavor proves it. Oh well, it's Ben & Jerry's, how bad can it be?
So, this is what it looks likes up close. For whatever reason, I was half expecting it to have a green color, or at least a green hue, but it doesn't. There is a decent scattering of pistachios, and there is a smell that is hard to miss. The funny thing is, the smell reminds me of angel food cake crust. Actually, the taste kind of does to. I should admit something though. I almost spit out the first bite. It took me totally by surprise and I really wasn't sure what to do with myself. I did manage to proceed but the pistachio funk was having a cumulative effect on me. The base ice cream seems extra creamy which I'm enjoying, but the overall flavor is overpowering me.
I started mixing my ice cream with some Hard Pretzels at about a 1:1 ratio. It did a decent job of taking the edge off and the creaminess is a nice contrast to the crunchiness. I managed to finish an entire serving of this peculiar ice cream, though I don't see myself finishing this pint.
This ice cream is just so powerful and unique that I can't imagine that it is is a huge seller. You know, I'm never happy. Either a flavor is too bland or too powerful. If you love pistachios, you'll love this. If not, well, save your saturated fat intake for something you'll enjoy more.
On Second Scoop: Well, I called it, it's been 6 weeks and I finally had a few more bites of this flavor. It's not that it's a bad product, I just can't get into the flavor. I was ready for the funk this time, and part of me feels like I should not waste ...maybe I'll try again in another 6 weeks.

Well, if you don't like pistachio ice cream, you shouldn't be eating it, should you? I've been a pistachio ice cream fan since the first time I tried it at age 10, and Ben & Jerry's Pistachio Pistachio is far and away the best I've ever tried. As to the color of the nuts, it can vary from cultivar to cultivar and it also depends on how ripe the nuts are. The thing is, pistachios are delicious (to those of us who like them) at any stage of ripeness. What's amazing about this ice cream is it has LOTS of nuts in it, which is just what I want.

I bought this because I'm a lover of everything Ben & Jerry and this is the only flavor in town that I hadn't tried. I do like pistachios, but I don't think I could eat this every day. The first thing I noticed was the unusual creaminess (which I loved), but it's so creamy that I can only eat a few bites at a time. They were definitely not stingy with the nuts. By the way, I love your blog!
