Ben & Jerry's Pistachio Pistachio Ice Cream

So, were you wondering what these are?

Well, it's hard to keep a secret when the title of the post tells you what they are - These are two pistachios I found in a pint of Ben & Jerry's Pistachio Pistachio Ice Cream. I guess they say it twice because you will find both brown and green pistachio's in the ice cream... Ok, I just made that up, but it's not like I know a lot about pistachios. The first time I ate a pistachio was just a few months ago when I tried some funky blend of Planters nuts and there were a few mixed in.

So, here is a freshly opened container. Now I have to ask - what in the world was I thinking when I bought this? Sometimes when I'm strolling down the freezer aisle, I am just so hungry that I'm willing to try anything, and this flavor proves it. Oh well, it's Ben & Jerry's, how bad can it be?

So, this is what it looks likes up close. For whatever reason, I was half expecting it to have a green color, or at least a green hue, but it doesn't. There is a decent scattering of pistachios, and there is a smell that is hard to miss. The funny thing is, the smell reminds me of angel food cake crust. Actually, the taste kind of does to. I should admit something though. I almost spit out the first bite. It took me totally by surprise and I really wasn't sure what to do with myself. I did manage to proceed but the pistachio funk was having a cumulative effect on me. The base ice cream seems extra creamy which I'm enjoying, but the overall flavor is overpowering me.

I started mixing my ice cream with some Hard Pretzels at about a 1:1 ratio. It did a decent job of taking the edge off and the creaminess is a nice contrast to the crunchiness. I managed to finish an entire serving of this peculiar ice cream, though I don't see myself finishing this pint.

This ice cream is just so powerful and unique that I can't imagine that it is is a huge seller. You know, I'm never happy. Either a flavor is too bland or too powerful. If you love pistachios, you'll love this. If not, well, save your saturated fat intake for something you'll enjoy more.

On Second Scoop: Well, I called it, it's been 6 weeks and I finally had a few more bites of this flavor. It's not that it's a bad product, I just can't get into the flavor. I was ready for the funk this time, and part of me feels like I should not waste ...maybe I'll try again in another 6 weeks.

Well, if you don't like pistachio ice cream, you shouldn't be eating it, should you? I've been a pistachio ice cream fan since the first time I tried it at age 10, and Ben & Jerry's Pistachio Pistachio is far and away the best I've ever tried. As to the color of the nuts, it can vary from cultivar to cultivar and it also depends on how ripe the nuts are. The thing is, pistachios are delicious (to those of us who like them) at any stage of ripeness. What's amazing about this ice cream is it has LOTS of nuts in it, which is just what I want.

I bought this because I'm a lover of everything Ben & Jerry and this is the only flavor in town that I hadn't tried. I do like pistachios, but I don't think I could eat this every day. The first thing I noticed was the unusual creaminess (which I loved), but it's so creamy that I can only eat a few bites at a time. They were definitely not stingy with the nuts. By the way, I love your blog!

I don't think you understand..

This is by far the best ice cream that was ever created. The pistacios are perfectly blended into every bite and the consistency could not be better. The taste is smooth and not overpowering at all.. very subtle and easy. How could you even say that you wanted to spit out the first bite..

You must be a chocolate fan..

Personally I can't stand chocolate and Ben & Jerry's uses it way too much. I was glad to find this flavor.. It is pure, simple and beautifully clean tasting.

I have been eating their ice cream for many years and, this is the only flavor I buy now. I am rather addicted to it.

It's called honesty. This was only my second encounter EVER with a pistachio. I didn't exactly badmouth this flavor, I just said it was too much for a guy like me who never eats pistachios.

Your second encounter ever with a pistachio was in an ice cream? That's just...weird. They're pretty common, like common enough that I can drive two minutes to a pharmacy and buy some. You've eaten a ton of ice cream and yeah, that qualifies you to evaluate many flavors, but I'm gonna say that you were not the guy for this one. And besides, there are lots of ice cream shops that offer pistachio ice cream. Just to keep it real, this has been going on for a long time, and you are acting like this is something kooky dreamt up by Ben & Jerry. This flavor is offered at places as obscure as a hole-in-the wall shop in Laurel, Delaware (the land that time forgot) but also at Baskin Robbins, Carvel, and Cold Stone Creamery, to name a few.

I'm not really sure what your exact problem is here. I didnt badmouth the flavor, I've merely shared something I ran into 2.5 years ago. Am I not entitled to my opinion?

You do know that pistachio pistachio isn't B&J's top flavor right? It's not even in their top ten. If you love it, that's awesome, feel free to go start a blog about your love of pistachios, but please don't drag me into your personal pet peeve that pistachios don't get enough love. PEACE, LOVE & Ice Cream.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion (unavoidably), but my point was that some opinions are more credible than others. I then explained why I felt that way about this particular review. I have not actually eaten Ben & Jerry's Pistachio Pistachio; this was the reason I wanted to read the review in the first place. If you read what I typed, then you know that what I said had little to do with this specific product. What I said was more an expression of incredulity that someone would try to review pistachio ice cream with almost no experience eating pistachios and none eating pistachio ice cream. Anyone who reads the review can see that one can't really know if the ice cream is good (kind of the point of a review) because of a. your inexperience with this flavor and b. the likelihood that you simply don't like pistachio ice cream. I make these points with little passion; they are observations, articulations of just what it is that is frustrating people about this review. This isn't about some personal pet peeve of mine. Sure, I happen to like pistachios and their ice cream counterpart, but neither is close to being my favorite food. This is about annoyance at the lack of a really common life experience that should have been a prerequisite to this review.

Ummmmm, you started off by saying this is the best ice cream ever, now you admit you've never actually tried it? You also said it was the only ice cream you ever eat now, yet now you say it's not your favorite? I am confused.

As someone who has tried dozens of Ben & Jerry's flavors, let alone hundreds of flavors in general, why wouldn't I try to expand my appreciation for ice cream by trying something I'm afraid of?

The "Anonymous" who said it's the best ice cream ever is someone else. Obviously, more than one person can comment without a username. My comments are the ones posted at 11:01 PM on 6/6 and at 3:47 PM on 6/7. As for your last statement, you should try to expand your horizons. That was partially what I was getting at. However, someone who has only tried one version of something that is actually rather common (pistachio ice cream) is not qualified to comment on the quality of said thing. In such a case, the question of whether the ice cream is good/bad or whether you just don't like that flavor will always hang in the air. However, judging by your extreme and unusual reaction ("I almost spit out the first bite. It took me totally by surprise and I really wasn't sure what to do with myself.") to this ice cream, I would be willing to bet that if you tried several pistachio ice creams you would find that you just don't like that flavor, thereby making your opinion on brands of pistachio ice cream irrelevant. The same holds true for me and strawberry ice cream. I don't like strawberries or strawberry ice cream, so if I had a blog, why would I tell anyone what I thought of it? I know I like some chocolate ice cream and eat it fairly regularly, so there is a much greater chance that I have some expertise in discerning the good brands of it from the bad ones.

I still have no idea what your problem is. I'm merely sharing that I tried something new and it didn't work for me. Why does that bother you so much? I didnt say it was terrible, I said I didnt like the flavor. Do you understand that is the point of this blog? To try new things. Had I never tried it, I would never know if I liked pistachio ice cream. If you don't like my blog, move on.

Okay, I've explained what was bothering me in three different posts. If you really are too dense to grasp what I was saying, that's really sad. One more time, just for the Hell of it: Review sites should post reviews of products for which they do not have an inherent dislike and of which they have some base knowledge. If I hate cheese-flavored chips, I would not review them because my opinion would be useless. If I had only ever tried one cheese-flavored chip, I would not offer my opinion on that brand because I would have no perspective on whether it was a good brand of cheese-flavored chip. That is all. I give up.

Dubba said...

may I humbly return the dense comment and then remind you again that the point of this blog is try any and all flavors of ice cream. What part of that is confusing?

if you had a blog and you reviewed cheese flavored chips and told your readers that you dont like cheese flavored chips then they would have a better understanding of you and how you think. It's called sharing and rounding out one's profile. If you never posted about it, how would they know?

Ben & Jerry's Pistachio Pistachio is my favorite ice cream. I am not an ice cream afficionado, either. Basically I don't really bother with it EXCEPT when it is Pistachio Pistachio. Absolutely delicious. I might add that I adore pistachios. I am constantly amazed at the number of these expensive nuts in this delicious creamy ice cream. Fabulous! I am a new "Anonymous" so please do not confuse me with others who have used this name.
