New Half Gallons from The Farmer's Cow

[New Size for late 2019] So I accidentally stumbled on something very new at Donelan's on Friday. It's new half gallon containers from The Farmer's Cow. Haven't heard of them? It's not surprising, they are a small ice cream company out of Connecticut, and until now, I've only see their pints, and I've only seen those in Connecticut.

The Farmer's Cow Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream
vanilla ice cream with chocolate chips and pieces of cookie dough

So heavy and yet just $6.99 for a half gallon. I'll be honest, picking up a half gallon for the first time in a long time was weird (don't forget that I don't have access to Blue Bell). Their website says they use "16% milkfat and not too much air". Translation: 170 calories per 1/2 cup serving.

This is either a good sign or a bad sign. It's good if it's chock full of cookie dough... but it would be a bad sign if all the cookie dough has floated to the top. There's only one way to find out.

Wait, you may have noticed that it looks a little freezer burned on the edges and well, yeah, it is, but it's not terrible. You never know who's fault that is. Anyway.

I dig in and it's pretty good. It's kind of hard not to aim for the cookie dough so that's going to skew this first serving. It's just a respectable simple ice cream. I'm not getting a ton of vanilla flavor yet, but like I said, the top is a little freezer burned. I suspect this will get better as I go down as long as the cookie dough holds up. Only time will tell.

On Second Scoop: Well, here's a dilemma. So far the cookie dough chunks are holding up, but the texture seems to have gotten not better. It's weird. Maybe there is a high water content and it got freezerburned and then got weird from there possibly? I wont know for sure until I try another container. How about this, I will assume I got a imperfect container and look forward to trying something else. The only downside is that a half gallon takes longer to get through.

Verdict?  off container?
Buy Again?  will try another flavor

  1. I love your ice cream but I wanted to tell you that I have bought 4 half gallons from Walgreens, Dixwell ave. In Hamden Ct..... over the last several months, and everyone has been freezer burned..... choc chips completely sunk to the bottom.... it’s completely over priced in this store but I buy it because I love your ice cream...... they are ruining it on you!

  2. Just tried the vanilla last night at Shaws and was really surprised how much we did not like it. Yes, this half gallon also had the freezer burn that others have mentioned, but it was the lack of vanilla flavor that was surprising. It tasted almost metallic. Needless to say it was left in the sink to melt. Maybe the non-vanilla flavors are better?

  4. I had a perfect half gallon of this ice cream. I also love the Vanilla. No freezer burn in either.

  5. I bought the true half gallon (very nice to see that they haven't gone the way of everyone else thinking we won't notice the size has shrunk considerably) of the Tractor Tracks ice cream. I also had freezer burn around the top, crystals like it was melted and re=frozen. The vanilla ice cream didn't really have any vanilla taste, that was very disappointing. The fudge swirl was just seemed to be chunks of chocolate, hard, not more fluid like most other fudge swirl ice cream. Maybe that is from melting and freezing or just the way it is and it didn't have a lot of fudgy chocolate flavors. The peanut butter cups are very good though.
