Jon Donaire Ice Cream Cupcakes
A Superbowl Treat? - Review

Well well well, if it isn't already another Superbowl Sunday. My oh my how time flies... I don't know about you, but I've resisted the temptation to watch the commercials before hand, I want to be surprised (and hopefully not bored). Do you have your food prepped already? My daughter wants to make cookies for the game, but I've been saving something special for this day as well. You see, I might have something as a neat frozen treat for your party tonight.

These are Jon Donaire's Ice Cream Cupcakes, the chocolate kind." Deliciously moist chocolate cake filled with rich, creamy vanilla ice cream with whipped topping ". Never a big fan of when a company tells you it should be delicious, but considering how past Jon Donaire products have faired during my reviews, I'm not too worried.

Well, it certainly looks like a regular cupcake, it even has a paper wrapper on it.

Ok, look real close and you can see that the ice cream is less that a half inch thick, the rest is whipped cream. Also, that white-ish tinge to the cupcake isn't my camera's flash, it's the cupcake slowly defrosting. That's right, you can either microwave this bad boy or wait 25 to 30 minutes for it to thaw... trust me, you don't want to bother eating this thing right out of the freezer, it tastes terrible... in fact, it's not much better once it does thaw.

Unfortunately, this one is a fail for me. There is this terrible tingly taste funk that I find most unpleasant. It's not coming the base cupcake because it doesn't actually have that much flavor. No, I think the funk is from the bizarre whip cream. I took a big whiff and these things even smell wacky. I really didn't like these. I don't know if it's fluke, or some change in their typical whipped topping, or what they've done, but I didn't even want to finish my cupcake... at least my daughter enjoyed hers. I don't think I'll second scoop these, but I'll let you know what my wife thinks.

So, to recap, I like the idea, and the construction of it all isn't that bad. I was underwhelmed when I first saw how little ice cream there is, but the ratio isn't actually that bad wants the cream is factored in. I wish they would add a little pizzazz to these things. This pack of six set me back $6.98 (and that was at Wal-mart). For that price there should at least be something sprinkled on top.

Verdict?  Weird, tingly, stinky
Buy Again?  Uhhh, NO
